Long-held theory on human gestation refuted: Mother?s metabolism, not birth canal size, limits gestation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? New research by a University of Rhode Island professor suggests that the length of human pregnancy is limited primarily by a mother's metabolism, not the size of the birth canal. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of August 27, challenges the long-held notion of an evolutionary trade-off between childbirth and a pelvis adapted for walking upright.

Two traits that set humans apart from other primates -- big brains and the ability to walk upright -- could be at odds when it comes to childbirth. Big brains and the big heads that encase them are hard to push through the human birth canal, but a wider pelvis might compromise bipedal walking. Scientists have long posited that nature's solution to this problem, which is known as the "obstetric dilemma," was to shorten the duration of gestation so that babies are born before their heads get too big. As a result, human babies are relatively helpless and seemingly underdeveloped in terms of motor and cognitive ability compared to other primates.

"All these fascinating phenomena in human evolution -- bipedalism, difficult childbirth, wide female hips, big brains, relatively helpless babies -- have traditionally been tied together with the obstetric dilemma," said Holly Dunsworth, an anthropologist at the University of Rhode Island and lead author of the research. "It's been taught in anthropology courses for decades, but when I looked for hard evidence that it's actually true, I struck out."

The first problem with the theory is that there is no evidence that hips wide enough to deliver a more developed baby would be a detriment to walking, Dunsworth said. Anna Warrener, a post-doctoral researcher at Harvard University and one of the paper's co-authors, has studied how hip breadth affects locomotion with women on treadmills. She found that there is no correlation between wider hips and a diminished locomotor economy.

"That throws doubt on the assumption that the size of the birth canal is limited by bipedalism," Dunsworth said. "Wide hips don't mean you can't walk efficiently."

Then Dunsworth looked for evidence that human pregnancy is shortened compared to other primates and mammals. She found well-established research to the contrary. "Controlling for mother's body size, human gestation is a bit longer than expected compared to other primates, not shorter," she said. "And babies are a bit larger than expected, not smaller. Although babies behave like it, they're not born early."

For mammals in general, including humans, gestation length and offspring size are predicted by mother's body size. Because body size is a good proxy for an animal's metabolic rate and function, Dunsworth started to wonder if metabolism might offer a better explanation for the timing of human birth than the pelvis.

To investigate that possibility, she enlisted the help of Peter Ellison of Harvard University and Herman Pontzer of Hunter College in New York, two experts in human physiology and energetics. Building on Ellison's prior work on human pregnancy and childbirth, the researchers developed a new hypothesis for the timing of human birth called the EGG (energetics, gestation, and growth).

"Under the EGG, babies are born when they're born because mother cannot put any more energy into gestation and fetal growth," Dunsworth explains. "Mom's energy is the primary evolutionary constraint, not the hips."

Using metabolic data on pregnant women, the researchers show that women give birth just as they are about to cross into a metabolic danger zone.

"There is a limit to the number of calories our bodies can burn each day," says Pontzer. "During pregnancy, women approach that energetic ceiling and give birth right before they reach it. That suggests there is an energetic limit to human gestation length and fetal growth."

Those metabolic constraints help explain why human babies are so helpless compared to our primate kin, like chimpanzees. A chimp baby begins crawling at one month, whereas human babies don't crawl until around seven months. But for a human to give birth to a newborn at the same developmental level as chimp, it would take a 16-month gestation. That would place mothers well past their energetic limits. In fact, even one extra month of gestation would cross into the metabolic danger zone, the researchers found.

"It would be physiologically impossible, regardless of pelvic bone anatomy, to birth a more developed baby," Dunsworth said. "Our helplessness at birth is just a sign of how much more brain growth we have to achieve once we start living outside our mother."

The energetics, gestation and growth hypothesis would downplay an implication of the obstetric dilemma that Dunsworth finds odd.

"We've been doing anthropology with this warped view of the male pelvis as the ideal form, while the female pelvis is seen as less than ideal because of childbirth," she said. "The female births the babies. So if there's an ideal, it's female and it's no more compromised than anything else out there. Selection maintains its adequacy for locomotion and for childbirth.

"If it didn't, we'd have gone extinct," Dunsworth said.

One thing that has struck me as particularly strange is the amount of security engaged to protect the RNC venues and participants. There are law enforcement officers from every branch of government, patrolling the secured RNC zone on every form of transportation and checking to make sure passersby have the correct color-coded credentials. I've never been to an occupied country, but I can imagine it would be something like this.?

The security agents get a little bit jumpy every time I try to snap a photo, but I did manage to grab a few shots that give some idea of what it is like to be on the ground here at the RNC.?

The crux of why people are upset with Twitter is pretty simple: Twitter is?changing its Application Programming Interface (API)and closing off how third-party apps communicate with Twitter. For casual Twitter users, this means that Twitter controls what information apps can access on Twitter, how they access it, and how the apps shoots out the data on their ends. On the surface, the main goal is to keep Twitter clients consistent, and push ads equally throughout all of Twitter.

The Twitter developers who are worried about what the changes mean for their Business
Developers who build Twitter clients like?MetroTwit?or?TweetBot?are the most clearly affected by Twitter's new rules. In Twitter's new?API Terms, Twitter states that Twitter clients need to keep in line with Twitter's layout rules, which require tweets to be displayed in a single way, with all their buttons in the right places. From a visual point of view, all Twitter apps should essentially look the same. However, in a?blog post?back in June, Twitter also stated that developers should not, "build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience." Essentially, this means Twitter doesn't want people building new Twitter clients.

Twitter has also instituted a user cap of 100,000 people for any app that uses the Twitter API, but they are giving a special allowance to any apps that already has over 100,000 users. When a new app gets more users that 100,000, it needs special permission from Twitter to continue on. This includes not just the Twitter clients that show your Twitter stream, but also apps that tap into the Twitter ecosystem like the aggregation tool?Storify?or the "what you did a year ago" webapp?Timehop. Essentially, if your app taps into Twitter for any reason, you're going to see changes.

From a strictly Twitter client point of view, the changes seem like they'll cut Twitter clients completely. However, in a blog post, Tweetbot developer Tapbots explains they'll?continue work their clients?(iPhone, iPad, and Mac), and the majority of the app will be unchanged. Twitterific developer Icon Factory?says the same thing.

Not all developers are so confident, and?several have sent letters to the FTC?requesting an investigation into possible antitrust issues that arise by Twitter forcing other apps out of the game.

Until we see how Twitter enforces these rules it's difficult to know exactly what to expect.

The Twitter power users who like third-party utilities

Twitter power users are going to see big changes in their Twitter clients, but many of the analytics tools they use will remain untouched. In fact, in Twitter's?blog post?on the issue, they specifically high-five the likes of?Crimson Hexagon,?Topsy,?Hootsuite, and others. In short, if you're using apps that are targeted at businesses, for data mining or otherwise, you're probably fine.

However, power users will likely see less customized clients built specifically for certain types of users. Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani sums it up on the?In Beta podcast:

I think the big thing people are upset about is that we're going to see fewer custom power user clients. Which really sucks for the power user who want the very specialized client who lets you mute keywords, or whatever.

The reason? With a new rules, developers might not put forth the effort to build specialized clients anymore. It could also mean that currently beloved clients will just give up. It's no fun playing in a playground with chains and locks on all the equipment. Since this hinges on how developers react, it's hard to judge exactly what the effect will be until Twitter starts enforcing these rules.

Twitter users who like services like Flipboard that plug into Twitter

The loudest outrage from most people is how Twitter's been tackling the way third-party services access Twitter. In a tiny way, this is about how?Tumblr, Instagram, and LinkedIn?users can't search for friends on Twitter any more.

More worrisome about the new API rules is how it might restrict apps like the popular social news app?Flipboard, which accesses tweets, but isn't a client itself. The worry comes from Rule 5a of the?Timeline display guide:

Tweets that are grouped together into a timeline should not be rendered with non-Twitter contents. Eg comments, updates from other networks.

Instapaper developer Marco Arment?talks about why this might matter in a blog post:

In other words, apps cannot interleave chronological groups of Twitter posts with anything else.

This is very broad and will bite more services and apps than you may expect. It's probably the clause that caused the dispute with LinkedIn, and why Flipboard CEO Mike McCue just left Twitter's board.

Closer to home for me, it affects Instapaper's "Liked By Friends" browsing feature, which will need to be significantly rewritten if I want it to comply. (If.)

Essentially, services that tap into your Twitter feed and regurgitate links into a new visual style could be blocked. This means magazine-style browsing apps like Flipboard?could?be cut off.

The likely reasoning from Twitter's point of view is simple. When you access links from who you follow on Twitter without ever going to Twitter itself, you can get the Twitter experience without ever looking at advertisements.

It's easy to see that Twitter needs to make money, but many people hoped (perhaps naively) that Twitter would still function as a platform. Not as yet another Facebook.

So, should you care?

Twitter's guidelines for some of these changes are still pretty vague, and interpretations of how Twitter will implement the changes are all over the place. Developers have six months to comply with the new API, and hopefully by then we'll have a better idea of how it's going to affect everyone.

So, should you care? That depends on how you use Twitter. The issues above effect different people in different ways, but even the casual user will see restrictions with the apps and clients they use.

Compared to a year ago, ecommerce is up 15%, according to new data from comScore. The report indicates consumers spent $43.2 billion in online purchases last quarter, meaning it?s the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. It also found 42% of ecommerce purchases included free shipping, a fact that may be contributing to shoppers? willingness to buy online.

Some reports have predicted ecommerce will be a nearly $300-billion industry in the United States by 2015. With so many consumers moving their shopping transactions to the web, it?s hard to ignore that more companies are changing the way they sell their products, and the way consumers shop. Below are five companies leading big changes in the shopping scene.

1. Storenvy

Founded in 2008, Storenvy empowers sellers across the spectrum ? ranging from hobbyists to major retailers ? to easily launch and run independent, fully customizable online stores. At the same time, by lacing together thousands of stores into a marketplace, the startup offers consumers a new kind of shopping experience. By offering both the platform for sellers and the marketplace for shoppers, Storenvy is quite different from competitors like Shopify and Etsy, which offer only one or the other.

Storenvy may be on its way to become the default store platform for the social web, by both knocking down barriers of entry for product sellers and presenting a new social shopping experience for product consumers.

In the last year the company has seen a nearly fourfold increase in gross revenue through connecting its millions of shopping visitors to the more than 18,000 independent stores utilizing the free platform (there are fees for premium features).

2. Augment

Many ecommerce sites are revolutionizing the way we browse and buy products online, but none are revolutionizing online shopping technology in quite the same way as Augment.

The French startup is bringing augmented reality, a technology that merges a user?s view of the real world with computer-generated input like sound, video, or graphics, to e-merchants. Though the site didn?t actually invent augmented reality, they?re looking to use the technology to allow consumers to view 3D images of their objects on smartphones prior to purchasing. This could drastically impact the way consumers view and compare products while shopping?not to mention all the other uses the technology affords.

3. Threadflip

Threadflip, launched in April and focuses on the social aspect of an online marketplace. Threadflip allows users to sell and buy women?s fashions, including clothing and accessories. The site was founded on the idea that women?s closets often contain a treasure trove of items that are no longer worn, but could be loved by a new owner just as much.

The site is thriving after receiving a total of $8.1 million in startup funding, and it recently released a mobile app. Users can post items themselves, or they can use Threadflip?s white glove service, which takes care of much of the hard work. It provides users with a box to send their items to the company, which then takes care of photographing, uploading images, pricing, and shipping. The site is switching up the concept of traditional selling sites by focusing primarily on women?s fashion and introducing a social aspect.

4. Knot Standard

Knot Standard is a company that offers made-to-order suits. Last month, it launched its ecommerce site so customers can fit themselves and order suits online. The site offers various options for users to customize their suits, including different colors, fabrics, and cuts.

The 360-spin photography allows users to see the finished suit from each angle, and advisors are available 24/7 to help with any questions. By bringing the fitting process online, the site is revolutionizing the way we shop for and customize more complex clothing items.

5. The Fancy

The Fancy allows users to compile wish lists of items and even make purchases through the site. It?s been rumored that Apple is in talks to purchase the ecommerce site and mobile application. Although it?s significantly smaller than its rival Pinterest, the site pulls in about $10,000 per day in sales and is valued at about $100 million. Unheard Martin Luther King Jr. tape found in attic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Stephon Tull was looking through dusty old boxes in his father's attic in Chattanooga a few months ago when he stumbled onto something startling: an audio reel labeled, "Dr. King interview, Dec. 21, 1960."

He wasn't sure what he had until he borrowed a friend's reel-to-reel player and listened to the recording of his father interviewing Martin Luther King Jr. for a book project that never came to fruition. In clear audio, King discusses the importance of the civil rights movement, his definition of nonviolence and how a recent trip of his to Africa informed his views. Tull said the recording had been in the attic for years, and he wasn't sure who other than his father may have heard it.

"No words can describe. I couldn't believe it," he told The Associated Press this week in a phone interview from his home in Chattanooga. "I found ... a lost part of history."

Many recordings of King are known to exist among hundreds of thousands of documents related to his life that have been catalogued and archived. But one historian said the newly discovered interview is unusual because there's little audio of King discussing his activities in Africa, while two of King's contemporaries said it's exciting to hear a little-known recording of their friend for the first time.

Tull plans to offer the recording at a private sale arranged by a New York broker and collector later this month.

Tull said his father, an insurance salesman, had planned to write a book about the racism he encountered growing up in Chattanooga and later as an adult. He said his dad interviewed King when he visited the city, but never completed the book and just stored the recording with some other interviews he had done. Tull's father is now in his early 80s and under hospice care.

During part of the interview, King defines nonviolence and justifies its practice.

"I would ... say that it is a method which seeks to secure a moral end through moral means," he said. "And it grows out of the whole concept of love, because if one is truly nonviolent that person has a loving spirit, he refuses to inflict injury upon the opponent because he loves the opponent."

The interview was made four years before the Civil Rights Act became law, three years before King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and eight years before his assassination. At one point in the interview, King predicts the impact of the civil rights movement.

"I am convinced that when the history books are written in future years, historians will have to record this movement as one of the greatest epics of our heritage," he said.

King had visited Africa about a month before the interview, and he discusses with Tull's father how leaders there viewed the racial unrest in the United States.

"I had the opportunity to talk with most of the major leaders of the new independent countries of Africa, and also leaders in countries that are moving toward independence," he said. "And I think all of them agree that in the United States we must solve this problem of racial injustice if we expect to maintain our leadership in the world."

Raymond Winbush, director of the Institute for Urban Research at Maryland's Morgan State University, said the tape is significant because there are very few recordings of King detailing his activity in Africa.

"It's clear that in this tape when he's talking ... about Africa, he saw this as a global human rights movement that would inspire other organizations, other nations, other groups around the world," said Winbush, who is also a psychologist and historian.

"That to me is what's remarkable about the tape."

U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a Freedom Rider and lunch counter protester who worked with King while a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, said hearing King talk about the sit-ins took him back to the period when more than 100 restaurant counters were desegregated over several months.

"To ... hear his voice and listen to his words was so moving, so powerful," said Lewis, adding that King's principles of nonviolence are still relevant today.

"I wish people all over America, all over the world, can hear this message over and over again," he said.

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, who founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with King, agreed.

"I can't think of anything better to try," Lowery said of nonviolence. "What we're doing now is not working. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Matching violence with violence. We've got more guns than we've ever had, and more ammunition to go with it. And yet, the situation worsens."

A spokeswoman for King's daughter Bernice, head of The King Center in Atlanta, said she was traveling and couldn't comment on the audio.

Tull is working with a New York-based collector and expert on historical artifacts to arrange a sale. Greek extension depends on troika findings: Eurogroup chief

ATHENS (Reuters) - A decision on whether to grant Greece additional time to meet budget targets will be based on a review by lenders on the country's progress in meeting the terms of its latest bailout, Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker said on Wednesday.

"I have to underline this will depend on the findings of the troika mission and we have to discuss the length of the period and other dimensions," Juncker told a news conference alongside Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Warning it was the country's "last chance" to avoid bankruptcy, Juncker urged Greece to push through austerity cuts and said a credible strategy to close the country's fiscal gap was a pre-requisite for disbursing the next aid tranche.

"The ball is in the Greek court - in fact this is the last chance and Greek citizens have to know this," he said.

Samaras is hosting Juncker, the most influential European policymaker to visit Athens since elections in June, ahead of meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande later this week.

Holeman & Finch Bread Company (unofficially known as Atlanta?s best bakery) has officially opened its doors to the general public.? The technical term is ?walk-ins now accepted,? but I don?t know anyone who?s tried this stuff that has the patience for walking in order to procure such goodness.

If you?re in the minority of folks who read this blog but haven?t tasted head baker Rob Alexander?s work; you don?t really have much of an excuse now. If you don?t feel like getting up at the ass crack of dawn on a Saturday to grab it from a farmer?s market and/or haven?t visited any of the handful of shops that sell it, I?d encourage you to hustle over as soon as you have a second.
