(AP) ? Alaska wildlife biologists are warning about the dangers of moose calving season after several people were injured in the past week by protective cows, including a 6-year-old girl who was stomped by one in her backyard until her father scared it off with a log and a baseball bat.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Jessy Coltrane said cow moose are giving birth now, and people need to be extra careful in and near the woods.

"Cows are dropping calves all over town right now," Coltrane said. "Those cows are so defensive of their little babies. They will literally stand there on the edge of the woods watching you, and if you take one step into their personal bubble, they'll come out hooves flying."

The warning comes after 6-year-old Chloe Metzger was stomped by a moose Monday in her Eagle River backyard. She suffered a broken clavicle and injuries to her back, according to Wednesday's Anchorage Daily News (http://is.gd/B94Tfm).

The same day, a moose struck a man outside an Anchorage elementary school, but he was uninjured, police said. Over the weekend, a moose charged and injured at least two mountain bikers on trails at a south Anchorage park.

Chloe Metzger's mother, Julie, said her daughter and an 11-year-old friend were jumping on a trampoline when they decided to venture toward the woods into some nearby bushes.

They encountered the moose, which chased them back into the yard. The older girl ran and hid in a playhouse with an attached swing set, Julie Metzger said.

"My daughter didn't make it. I looked out, and she was curled in a ball protecting her head," she said. "Everybody was screaming."

The moose stomped on Chloe's back with its two front hooves until Julie's husband, Wade, threw a log at it, she said. It stunned the moose long enough that Chloe was also able to run to the playhouse, and Wade Metzger threw a baseball bat at it, Julie Metzger said.

Unfortunately for the girls, the moose ran into the swing set, became tangled and injured the older girl as well, Julie Metzger said. Eventually they were able to scare away the animal and rush Chloe to a hospital, where she had surgery.

The moose was calm when Coltrane and another biologist went to see it Monday after the attack.

Coltrane said moose can be unpredictable this time of year.

Several groups of mountain bikers learned that over the weekend on the trails at Kincaid Park. A couple of them were injured when a moose either attacked or drove the bikers off the trail, she said.

"It was all fast-moving, blind corners and basically running smack into the moose," Coltrane said. "I would definitely recommend to people to get a new hobby for the next couple weeks."

RIM Halts Trading To Issue Business Update, Hires RBC And J.P. ...

Canadian smartphone manufacturer RIM has briefly ceased trading of their stock today in order to issue a ?business update? from CEO Thorsten Heins to their stockholders.

Though the release takes the time to outline some of the company?s recent personnel changes, Heins also points out that the company has enlisted the services of both the Royal Bank of Canada and J.P. Morgan to help the company evaluate their financial strategies going forward.

To quote Mr. Heins:

To further enhance our commitment to successfully completing our transformation, after the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM?s business and financial performance. These advisors have been tasked to help us with the strategic review we referenced on our year-end financial results conference call and to evaluate the relative merits and feasibility of various financial strategies, including opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.

For those still unfamiliar with Mr. Heins? M.O., he?s made it very clear in the past that he will consider all potential options to ensure that the ailing smartphone company has a future. That includes the possibility of licensing their still-incomplete BlackBerry 10 operating system to other hardware manufacturers down the line, as well as the extreme possibility of selling the company entirely. Whether or not either of the financial advisors the company has been consorting with will prod him in either of those directions is still unclear, but at this point it seems like Heins needs a bit of help plotting the company?s course.

There are a few other juicy tidbits to be found as well ? Heins notes that the transition period RIM is currently attempting to wade through has been a tricky one, and that the company (perhaps unsurprisingly) will likely report an operating loss in their forthcoming Q1 earnings report. On the upside, the BlackBerry World conference seems to have done a decent enough job driving developers to BlackBerry 10 ? the free hardware probably didn?t hurt ? and the company now reports that there are 80,000 BlackBerry apps floating around in their App World.

While we shouldn?t get too hung up on numbers, the Windows Phone Marketplace hit that milestone last month, and that platform has only been around for roughly two years. In short, RIM still has a long to go to prove that their platform is still one to keep our eyes on.

RIM thought the news big enough to temporarily ceased all trading activity, a move they?re rather familiar with. They pulled something similar back in March just ahead of the release of their disappointing fourth quarter financials and the announcement that co-CEO Jim Balsillie was stepping away from the board of directors.

The full release has been reproduced below:

Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today provided a business update from Thorsten Heins, the Company?s President and CEO.

?During the Q4 2012 and fiscal year-end financial results conference call on March 29, I said that I would provide our shareholders with candid and timely updates when possible on the progress and challenges RIM is experiencing. While we are no longer giving quantitative financial guidance, I wanted to provide a brief business update at this time, and will provide more details when our Q1 financial results for the quarter ended June 2, 2012 are released on June 28.

In terms of challenges, as I mentioned on the March financial results conference call, RIM is going through a significant transformation as we move towards the BlackBerry 10 launch, and our financial performance will continue to be challenging for the next few quarters. The on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace, and we expect our Q1 results to reflect this, and likely result in an operating loss for the quarter. We are continuing to be aggressive as we compete for our customers? business ? both enterprise and consumer ? around the world, and our teams are working hard to provide cost-competitive, feature-rich solutions to our global customer base. On the positive side, we expect to further increase our cash position in Q1 from the approximately $2.1 billion we had at the end of fiscal 2012.

Despite the current challenges, we have made significant progress on a number of fronts in the past few months:

Our annual BlackBerry World conference and BlackBerry 10 Jam took place earlier this month and both were tremendously successful. More than 5,000 developers, partners, carriers and enterprise customers from 115 different countries saw the first glimpses of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 platform and their response was encouraging.

Our developer partners have been enthusiastic with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha prototype unit we distributed at BlackBerry World and many are well underway in developing applications to be ready for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the latter part of calendar 2012.

The support and enthusiasm from our developer community is also reflected in our app growth, where we now feature more than 80,000 apps, which represents a 220% increase from one year ago, and more than 15,000 apps for PlayBook compared to less than 2,000 last year. We believe this bodes well for our ecosystem as we get set to launch BlackBerry 10.

We are making steady progress with the innovation of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 mobile computing platform, which is still on track to launch in the latter part of calendar 2012.

Our global subscriber base continued to grow this quarter to approximately 78 million, driven primarily by growth in international markets, which is partially offset by high churn in the United States, and our BBM user base has grown to approximately 59 million users globally.

Our strong brand internationally was recently enhanced with the successful launch of two new BlackBerry 7 phones in India and Latin America.

We continue to make strategic changes to RIM?s senior management team with the hiring of two key new members to RIM?s executive leadership team. Kristian Tear, our Chief Operating Officer, whose background also includes extensive experience in international sales in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and Frank Boulben, our Chief Marketing Officer, who will provide our team with deep experience in the mobile computing and communications industry. Both will assist me and the existing executive team as we continue to make the organizational changes necessary to position RIM for the future and prepare for the launch of our new BlackBerry 10 platform.

The CORE (cost optimization and resource efficiency) program we told you about previously is focused on delivering key operational savings through various initiatives. The financial objectives for the CORE program are targeted to drive $1 billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013, based on our Q4 run rate. We are targeting better efficiency and use of resources in our sales and marketing initiatives to effectively leverage marketing windows and evaluate our country portfolio to determine where it makes sense for us to prioritize our efforts. We will also continue to review RIM?s organizational structure and clearly define accountabilities for all key businesses and business processes with a goal of eliminating fragmentation, duplication and inefficiencies. While there will be significant spending reductions and headcount reductions in some areas throughout the remainder of the fiscal year, we will continue to spend and hire in key areas such as those associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and those tied to the growth of our application developer community. We will share more details regarding our progress throughout the year as programs are implemented or changes are completed.

Although we are facing challenges, we remain excited about BlackBerry 10 and believe that this platform coupled with the results of the strategic review will create long-term value for our stakeholders. We will provide another more detailed business update when we report our first quarter results in June.?

Wrinkles ? The First Sign of Aging

The skin texture changes with age and the skin develops folds and creases which are also termed as wrinkles. Skin wrinkles appear on the body due to some processes like glycation. Wrinkles are caused majorly by aging and also because of the sun. Many creams are available in the market that can be used in taking care of wrinkles.

Wrinkles can be easily cared for at the right age. Wrinkles are natural part of aging, but they are most prominent on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, neck, hands and forearm. Environmental exposure, such as to heat, wind and dust, as well as smoking, also may contribute to wrinkling. Drink as much water as you can. Fatty substances and oily food particles that get entrapped in your body find their way out with ease. The more water you consume, the more hydrated your skin can be.

If you are forced to live in a dry temperature, apply moisturizers and protect your skin.

At the same time, experts say, many of us are losing the wrinkle battle, watching helplessly as the glow of youth goes on the dimmer switch. As you age wrinkles settle on your skin. This is nature. Your skin would have a tendency to loosen and show up wrinkles all over. Women worry about this to a greater extent than men. Wrinkles tend to make people look older as time goes on.

There are many ways to avoid wrinkles or at least to prevent them from increasing. If an individual is careful then they will seek a better protection from wrinkles. The following points should be observed in order to prevent wrinkles before old age.
? ?Avoid the sun
? ?Wear sunscreen.
? ?Avoid smoking
? ?Sleep properly
? ?Sleep on your back which is effective
? ?Squinting does not help wear glasses
? ?Fish is helpful
? ?Coffee does not help so avoid it and instead drink cocoa
? ?Fruits and vegetables help a lot
? ?Moisturizer is the best way to avoid the wrinkles
? ?Excessive washing is good to avoid wrinkles

A big support could be found in the best rated anti wrinkle cream out there, called Lush Illumination. Lush Illumination is considered an oracle of aging woes. This wonder product enhances the collagen levels to give a suppler and tighter looking skin. Also, the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines has significant reduction and with regular use of this product, you will emerge out smoother and firmer.

Lush Illumination uses a special formula, which doctors only dreamed about few years ago. With help of? this year technology, a complex mixture of ingredients has been created. In this manner, Lush Illumination could make you forget about wrinkles and fine lines in days!

Soft- Skills Training Needs in Indian BPOs: Authentic Journeys

By: Jennifer Kumar
Edited by: Sufi Swarup

TeamworkSoft-skills training and development became a hot topic in India since the early 2000s when outsourcing, offshoring, BPOs, and call centers were all the rage. In his paper entitled Soft-skills Training and Cultural Sensitization of Indian BPO workers: A Qualitative Study, Ramesh Subramaniam says that new hires in BPOs and call centers in Bangalore in the mid 2000s were given up to 90 days of soft skill training to fill in the gaps and also to sensitize the workers to a foreign culture.

Though this study focused on a particular company based in Bangalore, it can be said that other companies may have similar policies on training. From my experience in Kochi, India, the key difference between now and the mid 2000s is that there is less focus on accent reduction (although this continues to be a problem). This study also covered several topics about the training programs including how they were delivered, who delivered them, and in special cases, who received the training.

What are soft-skills?
Being a ?soft-skills? trainer, many ask me to define soft-skills. Soft-skills is a common term in India. In the U.S., we may call ?soft-skills? by other terms, such as social skills, customer service skills, etiquette training, public speaking skills, and so on. Soft-skills in the Indian sense encompasses all those topics along with other topics such as accent reduction, cross-cultural training, cross-cultural communication, global English, problem solving skills, time management, motivation, leadership, e-mail, and phone etiquette, among others. One can say that soft-skills encompass the aspects of the job that are not ?hard-skills.? At the same time, ?soft-skills? are critical to carry out the hard skills within an organization and with customers, clients, and stakeholders.

How are soft-skills taught?
Soft-skills classes in Indian firms are generally given in big classroom settings (for between 10-13 weeks), with minimal one on one coaching. The idea is to get as many through the program as possible. Here large numbers look impressive. However, this training, which is also looked upon as coaching for personal development, would be much more productive if it is delivered and retained in smaller group settings (under 20) or ideally in one-on-one settings.

According to Mr. Subramaniam, in the company featured in his study, soft-skills training was typically delivered in various stages:
Listening Comprehension
Role Play
Real Time Coaching
Performance Monitoring and Assessment

The training was often delivered in large groups for the first three sections. The last stage was within months after the training as managers and employees themselves notice their strengths, challenges, improvements, and shortcomings. Based on their shortcomings, more training may have been assigned in groups or in individual settings. In cases where verbal (or even, possibly, written) communication was a problem, snippets of the communication was given to a trainer to analyze and provide feedback on the steps for improvement. Based on what had to be improved, it was undertaken in small groups (if others had similar issues) or in one-on-one sessions. In most cases, individual sessions were more productive, as the employee didn?t feel nervous or shy to complete the challenging articulation exercises in front of others (among the other self-confidence and personal issues that may arise from personal development work such as language learning). In other cases, individual sessions were mixed and mingled with group work as the client?s need dictated.

Personal issues that arise are many and few are documented. In the article, Mr. Subramaniam quotes De as saying, ?The strain of assuming foreign accents not to mention personalities for long periods causes everything from sore throats to personality disorders.? This is meaningful information and as a trained coach and social worker with years of experience in coaching and counseling people with cross-cultural identity concerns and other mental and emotional challenges, I am not surprised. Balancing professional and personal life becomes even more pertinent and meaningful when the professional life requires one to adapt another culture, language, personality, and mannerism day in and day out. This is an issue that a language trainer on his/her own is unequipped to handle in most cases, but, can be better handled by someone who can teach both articulation and coach through the emotional concerns that arise due to managing multiple identities.

Who is assigned to teach these sessions?
Companies could utilize internally hired trainers or external trainers. There were pros and cons in utilizing either of them. In cases where a foreign culture had to be taught, most companies preferred to hire a native from that country as they were the best to give the employees first hand knowledge of the culture and language patterns.

In this study, in-person training delivery was discussed. Online and live webinar training delivery was not discussed.

Conclusions and recommendations
In this study, one learns about the process of hiring and training Indian workers in call centers and BPOs based on the information provided by one company. Having interacted with a few companies in Kochi, a city southwest of Bangalore, I noticed that the processes vary slightly based on the company. While it appears that the market is saturated for this kind of training in Bangalore in 2012, it seems to be just coming up in Kochi.

While in-person delivery by natives from the culture is preferred in a majority of cases, e-learning, teleconference, and webinars are gaining ground. Though corporates are exposed to these alternative forms of training, the Indian culture values face-to-face in-person interaction. Another idea that is gaining ground is that local Indians with more experience abroad become trained in a cross-cultural pre-departure program and then deliver that to their employees to avoid the costs of flying in and accommodating foreigners in five star hotels. Foreigners living as expats in India who deliver such trainings are the best bet, especially if they are charging lower rates than foreign based trainers.

In general, companies still prefer to train in big bulky sessions, where personal interaction from the trainer may not be possible. However, it?s noted that of late, companies in and around Kochi that this author has talked to have started taking interest in smaller group sessions or individual sessions for key employees. These one-on-one or small group (three and under) sessions are often requested for particular employees who require additional, specialized coaching. Some topics in this training are: e-mail etiquette, time management, creative thinking, problem solving skills, managing cross-cultural communication, understanding cross-cultural nuances, and preparation for special meetings or foreign visits, among other special reasons. In some cases, learning American accent or accent neutralization also factor into these specialized coaching options.

It is imperative that companies that employee local Indians who must communicate with clients, stakeholders, and customers abroad, continue to attend cross-cultural training. Though American media may be readily available on Indian cable, Hollywood cannot be used as a cross-cultural understanding tool on it?s own without understanding the American values and mindset that motivate the behaviors. The training is not about ?Americanizing? but learning how to relate better to Americans to create better long lasting relationships. Instead of seeing cross-cultural training as a threat to one?s identity, it should be seen as a learning tool, just like other tools that can help one succeed in the cross-cultural workplace.

(All italicized quotes are from the paper Soft-skills Training and Cultural Sensitization of Indian BPO workers: A Qualitative Study, by Ramesh Subramaniam. A paper presented by International Information Management Association, Volume 5, Issue 2, 2005.)

Co-creator of ?Living and Working in the U.S.A.,? an e-learning program, Jennifer Kumar, helps Indians understand and be more successful in their communication with Americans and in dealing with life in the U.S.A. Coaching sessions are available in small groups, individual soft-skills, and in-person Spoken English (Kochi, India) or via the Internet. Contact her at authenticjourneys@gmail.com.

Old aerial photos supply new knowledge on glaciers in Greenland

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating rapidly with the ongoing global climate change. But now research from the University of Copenhagen shows that the glaciers can recuperate within a short timeframe if temperatures are to drop. The results are based on a collection of Danish aerial photos combined with both old and modern satellite imagery as well as field work. The scientific results have created international attention and have been published as a cover story in the highly esteemed journal Nature Geoscience.

"We have managed to get an overview of the glacial evolution over a period of 80 years. This is the first time ever this has been done in a study of glaciers in Greenland. Results show that glaciers can recuperate within a short time frame if climate changes and temperatures drop, as it has in a period after the 1940s," says PhD student and lead-author on the project Anders Bj?rk, from Professor Eske Willerslev's Centre for GeoGenetics from University of Copenhagen.

Anders Bj?rk adds:

"Most of the scientific foundation, models, and theories on glaciers in Greenland and how global warming affects them are based on observations from satellites over the last ten years. Otherwise scientists have had to use previous warming events way into the past when wanting to compare today's massive retreat."

A fight for land between Denmark and Norway

The Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen and his seventh Thule-expedition in 1932-33 is a significant cause for the recent publication from Anders Bj?rk and Dr. Kurt H. Kj?r from the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen. Results have created international attention as Greenland stands as an important region for northern latitudes are affecting the rest of the earth's climate ? including changes in glacial conditions and related sea-level rise.

Originally, the many aerial photos, which have been achieved Danish National Survey and Cadastre, were used for producing new maps of the region in the early 1930s, as Denmark and Norway were fighting over the right of disposal of East Greenland, a fight without casualties which Denmark won at the International Court in Haag in the Netherlands in 1933.

Photos get a renaissance

With help from the scientists and the Danish National Survey and Cadastre, the unique aerial photos have now gained a renaissance in a different setting where climate change and theories as "The Tipping Point" ? where nature reaches a point where changes cannot be reversed are discussed.

"We have investigated no less than 132 glaciers on a 600 km coastal stretch in Southeast Greenland, both those who terminate on land and those who calve in the ocean. The historical photos have proven to be extremely valuable, and with these photos and other aerial photos recorded later during WWII and satellite imagery we are able to observe glacier change in very long historical context. In the early 1920s and 1930s, temperatures were high, similar to that of the present, and this affected the glacial melt. At the time many glaciers underwent a melt similar or even higher than what we have seen in the last ten years. When it became colder again in the 1950s and 1960s, glaciers actually started growing," says Dr. Kurt H. Kj?r and underlines:

"There should be no doubt that if the current temperature rise in Greenland continues then we will have problems with the melting of the glaciers. We are already seeing it now on the marine terminating glaciers where changes in temperature and ocean currents are influencing their stability. Another remarkable discovery we did was that the observed changes are not just local, it is happening in the entire region," says Dr. Kj?r.

Kurt H. Kj?r has previously worked with his colleague Svend Funder from Center for GeoGenetics on investigating sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean. Results showed that the sea ice extent has been far from stable throughout the last 10,000 years.

Kevin Pietersen won?t appeal Twitter rant at Nick Knight fine

Pietersen?s employers deemed that the batsman?s remarks were ?prejudicial to the interests of the ECB? and he has been fined about ?3,000, which will go to an ECB-supported charity. Pietersen was punished after a hearing in Nottingham organised by coach Andy Flower and Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket.

Although Pietersen is thought to consider the punishment somewhat severe, Standard Sport understands the 31-year-old is ready to let the matter lie. He could contest the decision but sources close to Pietersen suggest that going through an appeals process would be an unnecessary distraction.

Knight said he was unworried by the remarks of Pietersen, who described his presence on the Sky team for home series as ?ridiculous?. But Sky is a major commercial partner of the ECB, with a new ?260million, four-year deal to broadcast England matches live signed this year.

Pietersen has come a cropper on Twitter before. He was fined in 2010 for an outburst, which he said was a mistake, when he was left out of the one-day series against Pakistan, and later that year he berated Adelaide ground staff during the Ashes for failing to protect net wickets from rain.

Despite the problems it has caused, there are no plans to ban England players from using Twitter. The feeling within the Professional Cricketers? Association is that most England players have mastered the social networking site and that to impose too stringent rules would be counter-productive.

PCA chief executive Angus Porter said: ?We believe the code of conduct with regard to social networking works well.?

Down Housing Market - Remodelers in Columbus

Last updated 20 hours ago

Over the past several years, millions of homeowners have suffered the effects of the U.S. housing collapse. Though we?re expected to reach the nadir of average home prices sometime this year, it?s difficult to know if and when that will occur. While now may not be a great time to sell, there isn?t a better time to remodel. Here are a few reasons why you should build instead of buy:??

??Low Home Values
Many people buy homes in order to sell them at a higher price a few years later. However, with home prices hitting new lows every week, now is definitely not the time to sell. Instead of selling your home and buying a new one, you might consider renovating your current home. Not only will a remodel make your home more comfortable, but you could also see a significant return on investment once the housing market picks up.?

??Low-Interest Loans
Since the housing market is in the middle of a significant slump, new construction loan and home improvement loan interest rates have dropped dramatically. Even if you don?t have the liquid assets for a home improvement or new home construction project, you should be able to take out an extremely advantageous loan that is affordable to pay off.?

??High Customization Options
Even if you find the perfect home, it won?t actually be perfect. There?s always something you need to change in order to make the home better suited to your needs. Instead of buying an existing home and tearing out the various rooms, you might consider starting from scratch. That way, you can work with a skilled contractor to design and build your home exactly the way you want it.

If you?re planning on remodeling your old home, contact Dave Fox Design/Build Remodelers. We?ve provided Columbus homeowners with high-quality home renovations for over 30 years. If you call us at (614) 372-6810, we?ll get started planning your home improvement project today!

Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free (update: confirmed)

Windows 8 desktop on Qualcomm tablet

Microsoft has instituted a big change with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite that's leaving some current- and soon-to-be Windows 8 developers up in arms: it's pulling support for creating anything but Metro-native apps. After 11 becomes the norm, desktop developers will need to either cling to Visual Studio 2010 for dear life or fork over the $500 for Visual Studio 11 Professional. Programmers won't have the option of backdoor coding, either, with both the compiler and toolchain being pulled from Windows' framework. The situation doesn't represent the end of the world for some developers -- more established pros don't balk at a $500 price, and third-party tools will likely live on -- but it sets a much higher price of entry for desktop apps developed through the official route, especially if you want to write games using XNA. We've reached out to Microsoft for a response, but for now we'd suggest setting aside five Benjamins if Start screen tiles and app charms aren't your cups of tea.

Update: We've confirmed with a Microsoft spokesperson that it's true you'll need Professional if you want to write desktop apps using Visual Studio. It's equally correct, though, that third-party developer kits will keep building desktop apps as long as they have their own compilers and related tools. Students can get Professional for free if they're in the Dreamspark program.

More Windy & Hot Weather For DFW

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - We are on day number two of a three-day hot and windy streak. While high temperatures hit 92 degrees on Wednesday, the winds gusted to 38 mph officially at DFW Airport. We may not see gusts to 40 mph on Thursday, but we?ll stick with 20 to 30 mph winds and gusts between 30 and 35 mph.

High temperatures will push to near 95 degrees on Thursday and again on Friday, with just as strong wind gusts. Clouds developed in our skies on Thursday morning and will dissipate through the day. Expect this to be a repeating pattern through Memorial Day ? morning clouds, mostly sunny afternoons.

Increasing humidity with make it feel more uncomfortable this weekend, and also contribute to bringing our afternoon high temperatures in the low 90s for both Saturday and Sunday. The winds will ease into the ?breezy? category of 10 to 20 mph, and still from the south.

We?re still on track for low 90s next week, with a small pattern breakdown that may allow for a small storm chance on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Overall, it looks like North Texas will continue a hot streak of 90-degree heat to round off May and start up June. Last year, our first 90-degree days showed up in April. But this year, we waited until May 4. However, our present string of 90s started on May 21, versus last year?s May 24. This a certain sign of the hot summer yet to come.

Question by Ann: Is there a good company that does credit counseling?
I have been really trying to pay down my credit cards but no matter what I do it seems they raise the interest and re evaluate my payment every month!!!! My minimums are in the hundreds and it is draining me.
I got turned down by 2 banks on consolidation loans and I am at wits end. I have written to the companies, called, spoke to supervisors. I have good payment history except for 1 or 2 mistakes last year. It is horrible now.
Any advice?

The story behind Facebook's problematic IPO

And now for some more bombshell news about the Facebook IPO...

Earlier, we reported that the analysts at Facebook's IPO underwriters had cut their estimates for the company in the middle of the IPO roadshow, a highly unusual and negative event.

What we didn't know was why.

Now we know.

The analysts cut their estimates because a Facebook executive told them to, a source tells us.

The information about the estimate cut was then verbally conveyed to sophisticated institutional investors who were considering buying Facebook stock, but not to smaller investors.

The estimate cut appears to have influenced the investment decisions of at least some institutional investors, dampening their appetite for Facebook stock, and crucially affecting the price at which they were willing to buy Facebook stock.

As I described earlier, at best, this "selective disclosure" is grossly unfair to individual investors who bought Facebook stock on the IPO (or at any time since).

At worst, it's a violation of securities laws.

Facebook's dream IPO is starting to look like a nightmare

This latest chapter in the Facebook IPO story began this morning, when Reuters' Alistair Barr reported that the research analysts at the company's lead underwriters? Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan?had cut their earnings estimates for Facebook during the company's IPO roadshow. This was highly unusual, if not unprecedented (I've been in and around the tech IPO business for almost 20 years, and I've never heard of it happening.)

Analysts cutting estimates is generally regarded as significant negative news for stocks. This is especially the case when the analysts who cut their estimates are thought to be very close to a company?and, therefore, to have particularly good information.

(In the old days, before the implementation of Regulation Fair Disclosure, companies used to manage the market's expectations by telling trusted analysts to change their estimates. Reg FD banned that practice.)

The fact that some potential Facebook investors were told of the analysts' estimate cuts and others were not would seem to be a major "selective dissemination" issue.

It is inconceivable that a reasonable investor would consider the sudden reduction of analysts' estimates to be immaterial to an investment decision?especially if they analysts had privileged access to the company.

The SEC and FINRA appear to have acknowledged this, and they may now investigate what happened.

More broadly, everyone is still trying to understand what happened with the pricing of the IPO, which was hyped up to be the offering of the century. We now have some more information on that.

Given the PR and legal disaster that the Facebook IPO is rapidly becoming, most official communications channels have gone silent.

In the past few hours, we have spoken to several sources familiar with aspects of the transaction. We do not have complete details yet, but a general picture of what happened is starting to take shape. For now, please regard most of the information below as scuttlebutt, as it has not yet been confirmed.

The story we are hearing is this...

In early May, as Facebook prepared to kick off its IPO roadshow, the research analysts at the company's lead underwriters developed financial forecasts to facilitate the marketing and pricing of the IPO.

Such estimates are usually developed through close collaboration between the underwriters' research analysts and company management. These estimates are generally viewed by sophisticated investors as having been "blessed" by the company: They are perceived as revenue and earnings targets that the company has reviewed and believes it will hit. Sophisticated investors use these estimates when they are developing "bids" for the stock, as a tool with which to help determine the price they are willing to pay.

Importantly (and absurdly?the SEC needs to change this), these estimates are not published anywhere.

Rather, in conjunction with industry convention, these estimates are conveyed verbally to institutional investors who are considering investing in the IPO.

This is what happened with Facebook.

As critics lay siege to Facebook, Zuckerberg is MIA

As the Facebook roadshow began, institutional investors who were considering investing in the stock were verbally given the underwriters' initial estimates for the company. And, initially, there was a lot of institutional enthusiasm for the stock.

Several days later, however, on May 9th, Facebook filed an amended IPO prospectus with the SEC.

This prospectus contained new disclosure language that had not previously appeared in Facebook's SEC filings. The language was on page 57 of the prospectus, in a section discussing the company's recent financial and user trends:

Based upon our experience in the second quarter of 2012 to date, the trend we saw in the first quarter of DAUs increasing more rapidly than the increase in number of ads delivered has continued. We believe this trend is driven in part by increased usage of Facebook on mobile devices where we have only recently begun showing an immaterial number of sponsored stories in News Feed, and in part due to certain pages having fewer ads per page as a result of product decisions.

The appearance of this language unnerved some sophisticated investors and analysts, who took it as a? sign that Facebook's business might have deteriorated. The language was vague, however, and?to this former analyst, at least?it did not convey that Facebook's second quarter was weaker than expected.

Soon after Facebook amended its prospectus, all three analysts at the company's lead underwriters?Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, and Goldman Sachs?cut their estimates for Facebook's Q2 and the full year.

These estimate cuts were conveyed verbally to sophisticated institutional investors.

And, not surprisingly, these investors viewed the estimate cuts as a startling and negative development.

One important question, of course, is why all three underwriter analysts cut their estimates.

It seemed inconceivable that all three analysts could have read the language above and concluded independently that Facebook's Q2 was weak and therefore decided to take the highly unusual step of cutting estimates in the middle of a company's IPO roadshow.

More likely, it seemed, someone had directed the analysts to cut their estimates?most likely someone with inside knowledge of how Facebook's Q2 was progressing.

And we have now heard from one source that that is exactly what happened.

One of the underwriter's analysts has said he was told by a Facebook financial executive to cut his estimates.

According to another source with insight into the Facebook IPO process, until the underwriters' analysts cut their estimates, demand for Facebook's stock among sophisticated institutional investors was high. Once these investors heard about the estimate cut, however, they became more cautious about the IPO.

(Again, an estimate change like this during a roadshow is, at best, highly unusual, and it would be hard to interpret it as anything but negative. One institutional investor I spoke to said he has looked at more than 1,200 IPOs over the course of his career, and he has never heard of this before.)

The estimate cut, moreover, was followed by three additional pieces of information that were interpreted negatively by some institutional investors:

1) The price range for the deal was increased, which made little sense in light of the estimate cut,

2) The size of the deal was increased, which meant that more stock would be sold, and

3) Many smart institutional Facebook shareholders like Goldman Sachs decided to sell more stock on the deal?the "smart money," in other words, was cashing out.

Meanwhile, during private roadshow meetings, Facebook executives were reportedly "signalling" to some sophisticated investors that Facebook's advertising revenue would not grow as rapidly as some potential investors had hoped. Facebook's advertising business is driven primarily by company-to-company sales efforts, not by the self-serve ads that drive Google's business. Facebook executives reportedly made clear to sophisticated investors that this would limit the rate at which Facebook's ad business could grow.

By the second week of the roadshow, after the estimate cut and price increase, some institutional investors became more cautious about the IPO. According to one investor who looked at the deal, institutions "got the willies" and started to talk about paring back their stock orders.

Meanwhile, out in the real world, demand for Facebook stock was hitting a fever pitch. One senior stockbroker at a major brokerage firm reported that he "had never seen such demand" for an IPO.

These individual investors, needless to say, were not likely aware that the research analysts at the company's lead underwriters had cut their estimates for the company. They were also, presumably, unaware that Facebook's Q2 was weaker than expected.

At the end of last week, the time came to decide on the IPO price for Facebook's stock.

This process was handled by Facebook's lead underwriter, Morgan Stanley, and Facebook executives.

According to one source (unconfirmed), based on the book of orders submitted by both institutional and retail investors, Morgan Stanley found that there were two distinct price levels at which investors were interested in buying stock.

Institutional investors, having digested the news of the underwriter estimate cut, were comfortable buying Facebook stock at $32 a share.

Retail investors, meanwhile, who were presumably unaware of the estimate cut, were comfortable buying Facebook at $40 a share.

Knowing that a big percentage of the IPO stock could be sold to retail investors instead of institutional investors, Facebook and Morgan Stanley decided to price the IPO at $38.

Although the precise allocations could not be learned, a source says that Morgan Stanley allocated a far larger percentage of the Facebook deal to individual investors than is normally the case in an IPO like this.

On Friday, March 17th, Facebook's stock opened at $42. It spent most of the day above $40, and then sank quickly. With heavy support from Morgan Stanley, the stock closed on Friday at just above the IPO price.

Given the amount of stock that had been sold, Morgan Stanley could not support Facebook's stock price indefinitely without exposing itself to huge losses. In two trading days this week, as the IPO hype wore off and news of the analyst-estimate cut spread, Facebook's stock plummeted.

The stock closed today at just over $31 a share, about the price that institutional investors were reportedly comfortable paying for it.

The SEC and FINRA have already said they may look into the Facebook IPO process. The Massachusetts Attorney General has also just announced that has subpoenaed Morgan Stanley over the issue.

So, at some point soon, we will likely get the full story.

In the meantime, it's hard to conclude anything other than this:

In one of the biggest IPOs in history, in which a huge amount of stock was sold to small investors, privileged Wall Street insiders once again got much better information than individuals did.

Rights group aims to stop killing of Canada GMO pigs

WINNIPEG, Manitoba | Tue May 22, 2012 3:23pm EDT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - A U.S. animal rights group hopes to save a herd of genetically modified pigs from early deaths after funding dried up for a Canadian research project that has stoked controversy about altering animal genes to produce food.

Possible euthanization of the nine so-called Enviropigs, descendants of swine first bred 13 years ago by the University of Guelph in Ontario to lessen the environmental impact of pig waste, has drawn opposition from Farm Sanctuary, a New York state-based group that places abused animals in new homes.

"For the same reason, the university wouldn't be euthanizing healthy puppies or kittens, they shouldn't be killing these pigs," said Bruce Friedrich, a senior official with Farm Sanctuary. "They have a moral responsibility to see that these animals lead out their lives being pigs."

The Enviropig is one of a handful of research projects around the world that could engineer the first genetically modified animal for human consumption. But GMO plants and animals face tough scrutiny from regulators, with some consumers leery about unproven long-term health effects.

Trade repercussions could be considerable if genetically modified meat entered the food supply chain without government approval. Canada is the world's third largest pork exporter.

"It would represent an unacceptable and irresponsible risk for the university to allow these transgenic animals to be under anyone else's control ... with the possibility that they could intermix with either feral or domesticated pigs, or even end up in the human food chain by accident," wrote University of Guelph spokeswoman Lori Bona Hunt in a statement to Reuters. The university is located 90 km west (56 miles) of Toronto.

The university may not euthanize the pigs if it can find a new partner in the Enviropig project, Bona Hunt said, after an Ontario hog farmer group pulled its funding in March.

If it does terminate the pigs, the university has said it would put their genetic material in cold storage and continue research by analyzing data it has already collected.

Enviropig's researchers applied several years ago for approval for human food consumption from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada. Those regulators have not announced decisions.

Finding new homes for GMO pigs would violate Canadian government policies, Bona Hunt said. An official with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency could not immediately comment.

With the university not budging, the next step for Farm Sanctuary, which says it has 250,000 paid members and supporters in North America, is to mobilize a campaign of emails and letters urging Guelph to save the pigs, Friedrich said.

"These pigs have been born into Guelph's research labs and have probably not yet had the chance to take mud baths and bask in the sun and root in the soil, and be pigs.

"Guelph owes them that."

Environmentalists have cheered the setback for the Enviropig project and are also closely watching applications by AquaBounty Technologies Inc's engineered Atlantic salmon, which contain a gene from another fish species, the Chinook salmon, to help it grow twice as fast as normal.
