Boys & Girls Club establishes Ramona Outreach Committee ...

The Ramona branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego will be holding a meeting on May 24 for those who want to be involved in efforts to create more public awareness of the club and raise funds to support it.

The club has developed the Ramona Outreach Committee and held a meeting in April that drew several businesspeople who are active in the community and interested in providing more opportunities for children.

Robyn Andrews, annual campaign director for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, said she is launching the committee ?to help us get resources for the kids and families here in Ramona? and to ?promote public awareness of who we are.?

Another objective of the committee is to communicate the accomplishments, goals and needs of the club in Ramona.

Andrews said she would like to see more kids utilize the club, which has served Ramona since 1990.

Simone McCune, site supervisor of the Ramona branch in Collier Park, said some people perceive the club as daycare when it offers so much more. Activities focus on five core areas: character and leadership development; education and career development; health and life skills; sports, fitness and recreation; and the arts.

McCune said they focus on healthy eating habits and offer homework and education time. Recreation includes soccer and basketball leagues and non-competitive sports.

According to Andrews, over the past few years, local resources and funding for the club has dwindled. Funding is needed for activity materials, food for events, and to keep fees as low as possible for the families who participate.

Membership in the boys and girls club after-school program is $60 per child per year. Summer day camps with more specialized programs are $99 per child per week. Scholarships are offered.

The club is looking for members of the community to serve on the outreach committee, which will hold meetings approximately every six weeks at the club. Committee members will be asked to participate in a facility tour, presentation to a community group or as a volunteer for a fundraising event.

Members will also be asked to recruit a minimum of two prospects to attend a facility tour and to recruit a minimum of one new member each year to serve on a committee.

Those attending the first meeting suggested promoting the Ramona Boys and Girls Club at events like the Farmers? Market, health and safety fair, and rodeo and Fourth of July parades.

?The first year would be kind of a public awareness blast,? said Ramona Chamber of Commerce President Jason DeLeo.

Maureen Sinkiewicz, Union Bank branch manager, volunteered to chair the outreach committee.

The Ramona Outreach Committee will meet from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at the Boys and Girls Club, 622 E St.

This exoplanet could be slowly evaporating until there?s nothing left

Exoplanet with a tail of dust and gas baffles astronomers

In a system 1,500 light years away from us, there may be a world so hot that its surface could have started evaporating, forming a tail of gas and dust escaping into space. Worlds end usually because their parent stars consume them, or because they collide into another planet or heavenly bodies like?asteroids. But an evaporating planet that's dying an extremely slow death is something new to scientists.

Scientists identified the existence of the curious planet from the strange way its dusty tail affects the light coming from its star, as detected by?NASA's Kepler telescope.?Data from Kepler suggests that the planet is a?Mercury-size world orbiting a sun smaller and cooler than ours. It's so close to its star that it makes a complete orbit in less than 16 Earth hours, giving it an infernal surface temperature of 3,300 degrees Fahrenheit. Think of it as a world made of magma with a tail of dust, similar to a?comet.

Just the fact that Kepler was able to identify something as small as Mercury located thousands of light years away indicates that we're getting better at?exoplanet hunting. However, more research is needed to confirm whether what was discovered is actually a dying planet or something else. If it's truly the former, then it still has roughly 200 million years left before it completely vanishes.

Family | Love | Home: The Garden is Growing!

I know I've been talking a lot about the landscaping and outside of our house (getting our trees cut down, landscaping touch ups, garden planting, etc.), but I guess it's just that time of year that all this type of work gets done! Things are slowly starting to look up around here.

The grass is finally starting to grow in where we formerly had tree stumps.

I've been doing TONS of weeding. And finally got some more mulch to pretty up the front flower bed.

OK, so the azaleas are no longer blooming, but that mulch definitely improved the look of it. I also took some spare bricks we had lying around to edge the right side of the bed, giving it more of a finishing touch.

And look at how nicely the garden is growing.

You can see real plants and not just tiny little sprouts! I don't know what went wrong with our cucumber seeds, but only a few actually sprouted. The snap peas and carrots look great, and we've got about three zucchini plants that took. To be honest, since this is our first year, I wasn't sure if anything was going to grow so just seeing what we've got is so exciting. I must say that if you have young children, growing a vegetable garden is such an amazing project to create with them. There are so many benefits, not to mention the exercise and healthy foods they'll be eating from it, but the joy of seeing the fruits of their labor (pun intended!) is priceless.

Since I dragged my daughter to Home Depot with me to get the mulch, I told her she could pick out a flower for us to plant and this is what she wanted:

(It had just rained when I took these pictures so that's why everything looks wet.) After laying all the mulch, my back was quite sore and I didn't feel like digging around, so we just put the whole planter in the little indentation in the ground where the random daffodils used to live. She's happy so I'm happy!

Google aiming to close Motorola deal by Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google is planning to complete its $12.5 billion acquisition of cell phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings before Wednesday.

Motorola outlined the timetable in documents it filed Monday following Saturday's approval of the deal by regulators in China. That approval removed the final hurdle preventing Google from closing the biggest deal in its 14-year history.

The two companies announced the deal nine months ago.

Google Inc. prizes Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for its portfolio of more than 17,000 patents.

Owning the rights to those patents will provide Google and the mobile device makers who rely on its Android software with valuable weapons in an intellectual arms race with Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp. and other technology giants.

But investors are worried Motorola's business making phones will trim Google's profit margins.
