Woman charged with murder in NYC subway death

A woman is reportedly in custody in connection with the death of a man who was struck by an oncoming NYC subway.

By NBC News staff and wire services

NEW YORK?? A 31-year-old Bronx woman was charged Saturday with second-degree murder as a hate crime in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, New York City authorities said.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the woman as Erika Menendez, 31. He said in a statement that she was awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.

Brown's statement said that Menendez admitted pushing Sen and said she "pushed a Muslim" onto the tracks because she hated Hindus and Muslims ever since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. ?

Brown also said:

"The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway?commuter's worst nightmare - being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.?The victim was allegedly shoved from behind and had no chance to defend himself. Beyond that, the?hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendant's actions can never?be tolerated by a civilized society."

The woman fled after the attack Thursday. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

Publishing Your eZine the Cons | My life - ooremicy's posterous

As with any other types of businesses, publishing your own online newsletter a.k.a. eZine has its share of drawbacks, in spite of the several benefits it offer.

The purpose of this article is not to scare you away with the disadvantages of publishing your own eZine, as the benefits are often more attractive. However, I will also show you how you can easily tackle the cons.

One obvious challenge most beginning eZine publishers face is the creation of eZine content. Creating your own content can be tiresome, especially if you are not a gifted writer and that you run out of ideas every so often that your publishing schedule is threatening you.

A way of taking care of this problem is to create your content in advance. You can compile 30 days worth of content in one day, for example. If you are not blessed with writing skills, you can broker the writing task to capable freelance writers which you can find at places such as http://www.elance.com/ or http://www.rentacoder.com/. While you need to pay for such services, you are at liberty to take the credit for written articles.

Alternatively, you can republish articles from article directories such as http://ezinearticles.com/. This is a free method you can use in making content, provided you include the resource box of the original author and that the article has republishing rights conveyed.

In conclusion, you can easily tackle the content creation challenge using the mentioned methods that do not require writing on your part, free or paid.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Alto is a new web-based email client from AOL (yes, the folks best known for "You've got mail!"). In addition to syncing with Aol Mail, the service syncs with Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and even iCloud to make your inbox more attractive.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)The most notable feature of Alto is its "Stacks" arrangement of particular emails. Stacks are essentially filters for your inbox that are arranged in neat squares. Alto sets up some Stacks for you, pulling emails from daily deals sites, retailers, and social notifications all in their own groups. Clicking on one of those Stacks brings you to a tab where the emails are arranged in a grid. Alto also crawls your email to find all the photos and attachments and filter those into Stacks.

You can create your own Stack by dragging an email from the message list to a blank square. That will set up a filter from that sender, but you can add other senders to the Stack and, under options, add additional settings (e.g., subject words).

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Emails are presented in a scrolling list on the left, with quick action icons beneath each to delete, star, or snooze each message (a handy feature). You can also perform batch actions with the little actions button at the top.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Gmail shortcuts work here, your own labels are shown as folders, there are links to Google Drive and Calendar (if you like Gmail), and if you connect Facebook, you can get status updates from your friends here as well.

I experienced one issue with syncing, after not having used the service for a few weeks. However, that seemed to fix itself after I logged in again and waited a bit. The developers say they're actively working on improving sync performance, with a big update coming next week.

All in all, I found the webmail client to be fluid and easy to use. Its attractive design is like a breath of fresh air compared to just seeing a giant list of emails and labels in Gmail.

If you have a lot of email add-ons or labs set up, Alto, like other email clients, might not be for you. But if you want a fresher look for your inbox, give Alto a try.

A note on security: For Gmail accounts, Alto uses OAuth to get an access token, so it doesn't get your Gmail password. For other accounts, you do need to enter your passwords, which the AOL/Alto team says are heavily encrypted. Some limited account data (email metadata, up to 60-day cache of photos, etc.) are stored on their servers. You can read more about Alto's security and privacy measures here.

Alto was announced a little while ago, but is in private beta right now. Lifehacker readers can get in now with the SurveyMonkey link below (the first 5,000 will get in within 24-48 hours; after that, others will be approved a little bit later.)

CHICAGO (AP) ? Employees at a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago knew something wasn't right when they arrived to work and saw a makeshift rope fashioned from bed sheets hanging from the bars of a cell window about 20 stories above the ground.

Inside the jail cell Tuesday morning, investigators found a broken window and bars inside a mattress, according to an FBI affidavit. Stuffed under blankets on two beds were clothing and sheets, shaped to resemble a body, the affidavit said.

Authorities believe it was the handiwork of two daring convicted bank robbers ? the first inmates to escape from the federal facility in nearly two decades. They remained at large early Wednesday.

What's less clear is when Joseph "Jose" Banks and Kenneth Conley managed to flee, apparently by scaling down the roughly 20 stories from the cell they once shared.

The affidavit states both men were in their assigned area of the jail for a headcount around 10 p.m. Monday.

U.S. Marshals Service spokeswoman Belkis Cantor said they were unaccounted for during a 5 a.m. headcount. That count is not mentioned in the FBI affidavit, which states that jail employees noticed the makeshift rope around 7 a.m. and that Banks and Conley were not present for a subsequent headcount.

The owner of a shop near the jail said police helicopters and canine units didn't start swarming the area until close to 8:30 a.m.

Hours after the escape, the rope of bed sheets could be seen dangling down the side of the Metropolitan Correctional Center. At least 200 feet long and knotted about every 6 feet, the rope was hanging from a window that was 6 feet tall but only 6 inches in diameter.

It appeared to illustrate a meticulously planned escape from the 27-story facility that came a week after Banks made a courtroom vow of retribution. Both men are facing hefty prison sentences, and the FBI said they should be considered armed and dangerous.

SWAT teams stormed at least one home in Tinley Park, a suburb south of the city. Although neither man was found, evidence suggested that both had been at the home just hours earlier, according to the FBI.

Some schools went on lockdown after being inundated with calls from nervous parents. Mike Byrne, a superintendent in Tinley Park, said "our parents are so emotionally charged right now" because of the school shootings in Connecticut.

The facility is one of the only skyscraper lockups in the world, and experts say its triangular shape was meant to make it easier to guard, theoretically reducing blind spots for guards. The only other escape from the nearly 40-year-old facility occurred in the mid-1980s, Cantor said.

Both Banks, 37, and Conley, 38, were wearing orange jumpsuits, but police believe they may have quickly changed into white T-shirts, gray sweatpants and white gym shoes. The FBI believes both men were in Tinley Park, a heavily wooded area about 25 miles south of Chicago. Authorities were scouring a local forest preserve in the afternoon.

Banks, known as the Second-Hand Bandit because he wore used clothes during his heists, was convicted last week of robbing two banks and attempting to rob two others. Authorities say he stole almost $600,000, and most of that still is missing.

During trial, he had to be restrained because he threatened to walk out of the courtroom. He acted as his own attorney and verbally sparred with the prosecutor, at times arguing that U.S. law didn't apply to him because he was a sovereign citizen of a group that was above state and federal law.

After he was convicted by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer, he said he would "be seeking retribution as well as damages," the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune reported.

When the judge asked how long he needed to submit a filing, Banks replied: "No motion will be filed, but you'll hear from me."

Pallmeyer, a prominent federal judge who oversaw the corruption trial of now imprisoned former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, appeared to stick to her regular schedule Tuesday and there were no signs of extra security. Her office declined comment.

Conley pleaded guilty last October to robbing a Homewood Bank last year of nearly $4,000. Conley, who worked at the time at a suburban strip club, wore a coat and tie when he robbed the bank, and had a gun stuffed in his waistband.

Both men were being held in the Chicago lockup, which houses around 700 inmates awaiting trial in the Dirksen Federal Building a few blocks away.

Architect Harry Weese designed the building in the mid-1970s shortly after notorious prison riots in Attica, N.Y., and was asked to design a "more humane" lockup, said Jennifer Lucente of Chicago Architecture Foundation. That was one reason Weese ensured each cell had a window, she said.

The brother of Hollywood director Christopher Nolan also tried to escape in 2010. Matthew Nolan, who was being held pending an extradition request, was sentenced to 14 months in jail for plotting to escape the high-rise jail by hiding a rope made out of bed sheets in his cell.

Potentially Habitable Planet Detected Around Nearby Star

A sun-like star in our solar system's backyard may host five planets, including one perhaps capable of supporting life as we know it, a new study reports.

Astronomers have detected five possible alien planets circling the star Tau Ceti, which is less than 12 light-years from Earth ? a mere stone's throw in the cosmic scheme of things. One of the newfound worlds appears to orbit in Tau Ceti's habitable zone, a range of distances from a star where liquid water can exist on a planet's surface.

With a minimum mass just 4.3 times that of Earth, this potential planet would be the smallest yet found in the habitable zone?of a sun-like star if it's confirmed, researchers said.

"This discovery is in keeping with our emerging view that virtually every star has planets, and that the galaxy must have many such potentially habitable Earth-sized planets," study co-author Steve Vogt, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, said in a statement. "They are everywhere, even right next door." [Gallery: 7 Potentially Habitable Exoplanets]

The five planet candidates are all relatively small, with minimum masses ranging from 2 to 6.6 times that of Earth. The possibly habitable world, which completes one lap around Tau Ceti every 168 days, is unlikely to be a rocky planet like Earth, researchers said.

"It is impossible to tell the composition, but I do not consider this particular planet to be very likely to have a rocky surface," lead author Mikko Tuomi, of the University of Hertfordshire in England, told SPACE.com via email. "It might be a 'water world,' but at the moment it's anybody's guess."

Spotting signals in the noise

Tau Ceti is slightly smaller and less luminous than our sun. It lies 11.9 light-years away in the constellation Cetus (the Whale) and is visible with the naked eye in the night sky. Because of its proximity and sun-like nature, Tau Ceti has featured prominently in science fiction over the years.

Astronomers have searched for exoplanets?around Tau Ceti before and turned up nothing. But in the new study, researchers were able to pull five possible planetary signals out from under a mountain of noise.

Tuomi and his team re-analyzed 6,000 observations of Tau Ceti made by three different spectrographs, instruments that allow researchers to detect the tiny gravitational wobbles orbiting planets induce in their parent stars.

The three instruments are the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), on the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-meter telescope in La Silla, Chile; the University College London Echelle Spectrograph (UCLES) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope in Siding Spring, Australia; and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer, or HIRES, on the 10-meter Keck telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

Using new analysis and modeling techniques, the team spotted the five faint signals, successfully separating them from noise caused by stellar activity and other factors.

"We pioneered new data modeling techniques by adding artificial signals to the data and testing our recovery of the signals with a variety of different approaches," Tuomi said in statement. "This significantly improved our noise modeling techniques and increased our ability to find low-mass planets."

The new analysis methods should aid the search for small planets, allowing more and more of them to be spotted throughout the galaxy, researchers said. [A Galaxy Full of Alien Planets (Infographic)]

A nearby planetary system?

The five planets remain candidates at this point and will not become official discoveries until they're confirmed by further analysis or observations. And that's not a sure thing, researchers said.

"I am very confident that the three shortest periodicities are really there, but I cannot be that sure whether they are of planetary origin or some artifacts of insufficient noise modelling or stellar activity and/or magnetic cycles at this stage," Tuomi said, referring to the potential planets with orbital periods of 14, 35 and 94 days (compared to 168 days for the habitable zone candidate and 640 days for the most distantly orbiting world).

"The situation is even worse for the possible habitable zone candidate, because the very existence of that signal is uncertain, yet according to our detection criteria the signal is there and we cannot rule out the possibility that it indeed is of planetary origin," he added. "But we don't know what else it could be, either."

If the Tau Ceti planets do indeed exist, their proximity would make them prime targets for future instruments to study, researchers said.

"Tau Ceti is one of our nearest cosmic neighbors and so bright that we may be able to study the atmospheres of these planets in the not-too-distant future," James Jenkins, of the Universidad de Chile and the University of Hertfordshire, said in a statement. "Planetary systems found around nearby stars close to our sun indicate that these systems are common in our Milky Way galaxy."

If confirmed, the Tau Ceti planets would not be the closest exoplanets to Earth. That title still goes to Alpha Centauri Bb, a roasting-hot, rocky world recently spotted just 4.3 light-years away, in the closest star system to our own.

The new study has been accepted for publication in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Citizen science project needs your help to catalog Africa's great animals

image

Photos of these lions on the African savannah were captured as part of the Snapshot Serengeti project. (Photo courtesy of Snapshot Serengeti.)

Tracking Africa's wild animals requires a lot of science, a little technology and a whole lot of hard work. One project need your help in getting that work done. It's called Snapshot Serengeti, and it hopes to use the general public to catalog the millions of images that researchers take in one park in Tanzania.

?

Scientists with the Serengeti Lion Project have been documenting the lives of lions in the Serengeti National Park for more than 40 years.

Of course, in the old days, studying detailed animal interactions meant sending a graduate student out with a diary to conduct hours of observations.

?That?s like trying to understand Britain by sitting in Trafalgar Square for an afternoon,? Lintott said. ?You don?t get a picture of everything that?s going on.?

Lintott?s involved with a project called Snapshot Serengeti.

Scientists have set up more than 200 camera traps in the park in Tanzania to capture pictures not just of lions, but of all the wildlife.

But here?s the thing ? those 200 cameras capture a lot of photos. Imagine if you had not hundreds, but millions of holiday snapshots from your African safari to sort through.

?The cameras allow us to carpet the whole place, and get a real understanding of what?s going on,? Lintott said. ?But only if we have some help in sorting through the three million holiday snaps that we?ve got.?

And so, on the Snapshot Serengeti website, you are asked to look through the pictures. With just a few clicks, you can help identify the animals, number them, and describe what they?re doing in the picture.

?The cameras capture most everything,? Lintott said.

In particular, he remembers one sequence of hyena photos that recently caught his eye.

?The first is the hyena looking straight down the lens, like a superstar out on a Friday night. And the second one, the hyena?s in the background skulking. And the third shot is the inside of the hyena?s mouth as it attacks the camera.? Linott said. ?And that?s one of the problems. The animals take a strong interest in the cameras and they don?t survive all that long.?

The cameras can last about two months before needing maintenance and new batteries. Of course, they?re likely to be torn down by elephants or infested by ants before then.

But it?s all worth it.

The photos, Lintott says, will help scientists get a clearer picture of how animals, especially big predators like lions, interact with other big predators in the park.

?Do they compete for food? Do they attack each other? Do they ignore each other and go about their business? And so that?s one of the things we think we can understand by doing this experiment,? he said.

Lintott says experts are also hoping to get a better sense of just how much park land big carnivores need to survive and thrive.

The Snapshot Serengeti project, isn't an isolated project. In fact, Lintott?s group also runs two other popular ?citizen science? projects.

One called Old Weather gives you the chance to mine old Navy ships? logs for climate data. Another, called Galaxy Zoo, allows you to help classify galaxies.

(AP) ? With one championship under their belt, the Green Bay Packers are already eyeing a few others.

Aaron Rodgers connected with James Jones on all three touchdowns, Clay Matthews continued his dominance of Jay Cutler with two more sacks and Green Bay clinched its second straight NFC North title with a 21-13 victory over the archrival Chicago Bears on Sunday.

After starting the season 2-3, the Packers are showing signs they might have a run in them like the one that carried them to the Super Bowl title two years ago. They have assured themselves of a home playoff game and, at 10-4, are still in the running for the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

"We're just getting started," coach Mike McCarthy said. "We feel that way as a football team. We feel there's a lot better football in front of us."

Chicago, meanwhile, continues to slide. This was the Bears' fifth loss in six games, and they're in danger of missing the playoffs after beginning the season 7-1. Chicago (8-6) lost ground in the race for the last wild-card spot, and fans at Soldier Field showered the team with boos for much of the game.

Cutler had another dismal day against the Packers, throwing an interception that led to the game-winning touchdown. He's been picked off 17 times by the Packers, including 10 in his last five games. Alshon Jeffery was whistled for three offensive pass interference calls, all late in the second half when the Bears were scratching to get something going.

Brandon Marshall had Chicago's only touchdown, but had just 56 yards receiving. The Bears were held to 67 yards of offense in the second half and finished with 190, their third-lowest of the season. The Packers have now won six straight against their rivals to the south.

"Everybody involved in this offense should be held accountable, even if that means jobs," said Marshall, who struggled to compose himself as he spoke before cutting short his post-game interview. "It's been this way all year. There's no excuse. We still have two games left. There's still hope, but at the same time, we need to be held accountable."

It was Marshall who turned the heat up on what is already the NFL's oldest ? and fiercest ? rivalry earlier in the week, saying he'd never disliked a team as much as he did the Packers. Green Bay had held him to 24 yards on two catches in their first meeting back in September, and the NFL's receptions leader called the rematch "personal," adding, "But the talk, you have to back it up. We'll go out there and we'll do everything we need to do to get a win."

Marshall did his part early, firing up the Chicago sideline when he sidestepped one tackle and stiff-armed Casey Hayward on his way to the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown that gave Chicago a 7-0 lead. He screamed as he tossed the ball into the stands, and his teammates and the crowd roared in approval. Joe Anderson fueled the frenzy when he body-slammed Randall Cobb on the ensuing kickoff, and the Bears appeared to be firmly in control.

But overcoming adversity has become second nature to the Packers with the season they've had, and this game was no different.

"We don't try to trash talk," cornerback Sam Shields said. "When we get on the field we trash talk, but not in the paper. We let our actions show on the field."

Over the final 4:19 of the second quarter, the Packers went from a 7-0 deficit to a 14-7 lead thanks to a pair of Rodgers-to-Jones TDs sandwiched around a Hayward pick.

"That was important. That was really important," Rodgers said of the 14-point swing. "We couldn't them get up a couple scores and get into what they wanted to do, which it looked like they wanted to run (Matt) Forte a lot. Getting ahead of them kind of took them out of some of that stuff."

Having already been sacked twice, Rodgers was on the run again on third-and-6 when he spotted Cobb down the right sideline. He threw a dart to Cobb, who hauled it in for a 31-yard gain that put the Packers at the Chicago 35. Three plays later, Rodgers connected with Jones for a 29-yard score that tied the game at 7.

After exchanging punts, Cutler looked for Devin Hester only to find Hayward instead. It was the sixth interception of the season for the rookie, who grabbed the ball at midfield and returned it 24 yards. Five plays later, Rodgers hooked up with Jones again, this time for an 8-yard TD.

The Packers made it 21 unanswered points on the first drive of the second half. In another third-and-long situation, Rodgers threw incomplete to Jermichael Finley. But Green Bay got a second chance when Chris Conte was called for pass interference and, after a delay of game penalty, Rodgers found Jones for a 6-yard score.

It was Jones' first three-touchdown game and the fourth multiple-TD game of his career.

"You don't want to lose to your rival year in and year out. It's not a rival. It's a domination," Cutler said. "We've got to find a way, but that's in the past. Arizona's up next, we've just got to focus on that."

The Bears had chances to get back into it. Green Bay's Mason Crosby missed two more field goals, and Charles Tillman forced a fumble by Ryan Grant that Nick Roach recovered. Chicago got a big break on the next play when Green Bay safety Morgan Burnett hauled Jeffery down right in front of the end zone ? and right in front of an official. The pass interference penalty gave Chicago the ball at the Green Bay 1.

But the Bears could only get a 34-yard field goal by Olindo Mare out of it after Jeffery was called for pass interference, his first of three.

NOTES: Matthews has eight sacks of Cutler in as many games. ... The Bears sacked Rodgers three times, with Peppers and Corey Wooton each being credited with 1 1/2. ... Despite two more misses by Crosby, his 11th and 12th this year, McCarthy said the Packers will not be looking for a new kicker. "We're not changing kickers. Write that down right now," McCarthy said. "He's our guy." ... Randall Cobb had 150 all-purpose yards, leaving him 10 shy of Ahman Green's single-season Packers record (2,250 in 2003).

A chimney fire damaged a home at 1814 W. Mission in northwest Spokane this morning just after 9 a.m. Three residents made it safely out of the home, as did two cats and several birds.

Firefighters found smoke and flames on an exterior wall on the first floor when they arrived, according to a Spokane Fire Department press release. The fire was spreading to the second floor and attic. Crews had to rip open the walls and attic to put out the fire.

Investigators determined that the fire was caused by a wood stove chimney that set the wall on fire, the press release said. Damage is estimated to be at least $20,000. The Red Cross is assisting the?residents.

Rare Bear Has Twins at National Zoo

Two Andean bear cubs were born overnight at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, officials at the institution announced.

Six-year-old bear mom Billie Jean gave birth to the twins ? one around 12:01 a.m. local time and the other around 2:02 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 13), according to officials at the zoo in Washington, D.C.

Caretakers are monitoring the mom and newborns from the bear cam for now, allowing the three time to bond without interference. Zoo officials said they won't know the cubs' sex for at least two months. The two cubs' father, Nikki, had to be euthanized in August after his health declined; he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, or cancer.

This is Billie Jean's second set of cubs. Zookeepers began to suspect this pregnancy in November, and ultrasounds showed two amniotic sacs and then, with later ultrasounds, fetal growth and development. Her telltale "I'm pregnant" signs included a decreased appetite, a nest she built inside a den, and her lack of interest in going outdoors, according to the Smithsonian.

Andean bears (also called spectacled bears) live in South America and are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The zoo noted that the species has a high infant mortality rate ? up to 44 percent in the first year.

"The Andean bear population in human care has experienced a lull in the past six years and these cubs are the only surviving Andean cubs in a North American Zoo since Billie Jean's first cubs, Bernardo and Chaska, were born in 2010," zoo officials said in a statement.

The Importance Of Dental Care In Children | health and fitness ...

Dental care is a precious art for dentists. For some parents, it is not. Sadly, it takes time before parents identify the importance of dental care. Children first have to shout and scream resounding ouches before their parents pay attention to their miserable dental structures. Well, the belief is that these parents don't exactly understand how excellent oral care can benefit their beloved kids. Listed below are reasons that make evenly-spaced white teeth crucial to the overall health of kids.

Beautiful dental structures can accentuate your child's beauty. With a beautiful set of teeth, your kid can interact with people with poise. Kids with great smiles appear friendlier and more confident. Because they know they have a beautiful smile, they aren't afraid to flaunt their pearly whites to other people.

Dental imperfections may hinder your child from achieving more. Imagine if your kid desired to sing. Will it be easy for him or her to belt out when she or he is frightened to unleash his or her inner competencies as a singer! What if your child opts to close his or her mouth because she or he feels uncomfortable showing off his or her oral structures? Clearly, that lack of confidence may come from the idea that she or he doesn't have appealing set of teeth.

Do you want your child to feel competent facing other people? Then better get those teeth assessed by reputable cosmetic dentists in singapore who can help enhance the visual aesthetics of your kid's dental structures. Regarded as the experts in dentistry, cosmetic dentists can perform dental procedures that can respond to your child's cosmetic needs.

Nurture your child's dental beauty today. Contact dentists who are capable of doing the most complex dental processes such as tooth implant singapore. Entrust your kid's dental hygiene and health to these revered dental specialists!

Police, world wonder about Conn. shooting motive

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The massacre of 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school elicited horror and soul-searching around the world even as it raised more basic questions about why the gunman, a 20-year-old described as brilliant but remote, would have been driven to such a crime and how he chose his victims.

Investigators were trying to learn more about the gunman, Adam Lanza, and questioned his older brother, who is not believed to have been involved in the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary. Police shed no light on the motive for the nation's second-deadliest school shooting.

In tight-knit Newtown on Friday night, hundreds of people packed St. Rose of Lima church and stood outside in a vigil for the 28 dead ? 20 children and six adults at the school, the gunman's mother at home, and the gunman himself, who committed suicide. People held hands, lit candles and sang "Silent Night."

"These 20 children were just beautiful, beautiful children," Monsignor Robert Weiss said. "These 20 children lit up this community better than all these Christmas lights we have. ... There are a lot brighter stars up there tonight because of these kids."

Lanza is believed to have suffered from a personality disorder and lived with his mother, said a law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation.

Lanza shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, drove to the school in her car with at least three guns, including a high-powered rifle that he apparently left in the back of the vehicle, and shot up two classrooms around 9:30 a.m. Friday, law enforcement officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A custodian ran through the halls, warning of a gunman, and someone switched on the intercom, perhaps saving many lives by letting them hear the chaos in the school office, a teacher said. Teachers locked their doors and ordered children to huddle in a corner or hide in closets as shots echoed through the building.

The well-liked principal, Dawn Hochsprung, was believed to be among the dead. A woman who worked at the school was wounded.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said investigators believe Lanza attended the school several years ago but appeared to have no recent connection to it.

At least one parent said Lanza's mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.

Lanza's older brother, 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, of Hoboken, N.J., was questioned, but a law enforcement official said he was not believed to have had a role in the rampage. Investigators were searching his computers and phone records, but he told law enforcement he had not been in touch with his brother since about 2010.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the unfolding investigation.

At one point, a law enforcement official mistakenly identified the gunman as Ryan Lanza. Brett Wilshe, a friend of Ryan Lanza's, said Lanza told him the gunman may have had his identification. Ryan Lanza apparently posted Facebook page updates Friday afternoon that read, "It wasn't me" and "I was at work."

For about two hours late Friday and early Saturday, clergy members and emergency vehicles moved steadily to and from the school. The state medical examiner's office said bodies of the victims would be taken there eventually for autopsies.

At least three guns were found ? a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols, inside the school, and a .223-caliber rifle in the back of a car, authorities said. A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said some of the guns used in the attack may have belonged to Lanza's family. His mother had legally registered four weapons, his father two.

Authorities also recovered three other guns ? a Henry repeating rifle, an Enfield rifle and a shotgun. It was not clear exactly where those weapons were found.

Adam Lanza and his mother lived in a well-to-do part of prosperous Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, where neighbors are doctors or hold white-collar positions at companies such as General Electric, Pepsi and IBM.

Lanza's parents filed for divorce in 2008, according to court records. His father, Peter Lanza, lives in Stamford, Conn., and works as a tax director for General Electric.

The gunman's aunt Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

"Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," Marsha Lanza said, adding her husband had seen Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary.

Catherine Urso, of Newtown, said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style. "He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

Adam Lanza attended Newtown High School, and several news clippings from recent years mention his name among the honor roll students.

Joshua Milas, who graduated from Newtown High in 2009 and belonged to the school technology club with him, said Adam Lanza was generally a happy person but that he hadn't seen him in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid. He was smart," Joshua Milas said. "He was probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius."

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was not clear that Adam Lanza had a job, and there was no indication of law enforcement interviews or search warrants at a place of business.

The mass shooting is one of the deadliest in U.S. history, and among school attacks is second in victims only to the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, which left 33 people dead, including the gunman. Reaction was swift and emotional in Newtown, a picturesque New England community of 27,000 people, as well as across the country and around the world.

"It has to stop, these senseless deaths," said Frank DeAngelis, principal of Colorado's Columbine High School, where a massacre in 1999 killed 15 people.

In Washington, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence organized a vigil at the White House, with some protesters chanting, "Today IS the day" to take steps to curb gun violence. In New York's Times Square, a few dozen people held tea lights in plastic cups, with one woman holding a sign that read: "Take a moment and candle to remember the victims of the Newtown shooting."

President Barack Obama's comments on the tragedy amounted to one of the most outwardly emotional moments of his presidency.

"The majority of those who died were children ? beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," Obama said at a White House news briefing. He paused for several seconds to keep his composure as he teared up and wiped an eye. Nearby, two aides cried and held hands.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the attack as a "senseless and incomprehensible act of evil."

"Like President Obama and his fellow Americans, our hearts too are broken," Gillard said in a statement.

In Japan, where guns are severely restricted and there are extremely few gun-related crimes, the attack led the news two days before nationwide parliamentary elections. In China, which has seen several knife rampages at schools in recent years, the attack quickly consumed public discussion.

At the Newtown vigil, Anthony Bloss, whose three daughters survived, said they are doing better than he. "I'm numb. I'm completely numb," he said.

Panicked parents looking for their children had raced earlier in the day to Sandy Hook, a kindergarten-through-fourth-grade school where police told youngsters to close their eyes as they were led from the building so that they wouldn't see the blood and broken glass.

Schoolchildren ? some crying, many looking frightened ? were escorted through a parking lot in a line, hands on one another's shoulders.

Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher. "That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he said. "He was very brave. He waited for his friends."

He said the shooter didn't utter a word.

Kaitlin Roig, a teacher at the school, said she implored her students to be quiet.

"I told them we had to be absolutely quiet. Because I was just so afraid if he did come in, then he would hear us and just start shooting the door. I said we have to be absolutely quiet. And I said there are bad guys out there now and we need to wait for the good guys to come get us out," Roig told ABC News.

"If they started crying, I would take their face and say it's going to be OK. Show me your smile," she said. "They said, we want to go home for Christmas. Yes, yeah. I just want to hug my mom, things like that, that were just heartbreaking."

Protests after shock verdict in Argentina sex-slave trial

Demonstrators and police officers clash during a protest against the acquittal of 13 people accused in the disappearance of a young woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012.

The Associated Press reports ??The acquittal on Tuesday of 13 people accused in the disappearance of Marita Veron, a young woman who was allegedly kidnapped and forced into prostitution for "VIP clients," spread shock and outrage across Argentina on Wednesday, prompting street protests and calls by political leaders to impeach the three judges who delivered the verdict.

Many called the ruling a setback for Argentina's efforts to combat sex trafficking, which began largely as a result of Susana Trimarco's one-woman, decade-long quest to find her missing daughter, Maria de los Angeles "Marita" Veron. Her attorneys said she would pursue appeals.

Susana Trimarco via AP

Susana Trimarco, right, poses with her daughter Marita Veron and her granddaughter Micaela, daughter of Marita, in 2002.

Trimarco was a housewife who paid scant attention to the news until her daughter, Marita, disappeared. After getting little help from police, Trimarco launched her own investigation after receiving a tip that Marita may have been abducted and forced into sex slavery. Trimarco visited brothels seeking clues and the search took an additional goal: rescuing sex slaves and helping them start new lives. But years of searching haven't led Trimarco to Marita. Volunteers provide key emergency communications - The Powell ...

Ham radio operators in Powell River are a key part of the region?s emergency response system. Members of Powell River Amateur Repeater Society and Powell River Amateur Radio Club volunteer to be part of the emergency radio communication unit, which comes under the umbrella of Powell River Regional Emergency Program (PRREP).

A major disaster on the West Coast would have the potential to knock out communications, including telephone and Internet service. The unit would activate equipment kept in an emergency communications trailer, which can be set up wherever an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) would be established. Both the Powell River Regional District and City of Powell River have contributed funds for equipment, as well as a grant from BC Gaming.

The emergency radio communications group, which has 10 regular members, is part of Emergency Management BC (EMBC), said Russell Storry, emergency radio coordinator. ?We have identify cards and coverage through WorkSafeBC for a tasked event,? he explained. ?We complement Emergency Social Services [ESS] and ground search and rescue.?

The trailer is equipped with generators and fuel, Storry explained. ?Our task is to pass messages. We provide backup communications in the event that telephones and Internet are not available.?

The group recently added a system which enables them to send digital messages within the region and also to Victoria, using a combination of amateur radios and other equipment. The system allows an EOC in Powell River to have outside communications and both send and receive messages.

Digital messages can be sent between two ham radios connected to netbooks or laptop computers that can run off batteries, explained Derek Poole, a radio operator with the unit. ?With the software we?re using and that hardware, we can send text messages, emails back and forth,? he said.

Without the system, communications would be voice-to-voice over the radio, Poole said, or actually picking the message up physically and delivering it. ?The problem with a real large-scale event can sometimes be the radios can really get tied up with the urgency of the communications,? he said. ?This uses a different system, a different set of frequencies and it?s very fast. When you send a message with this method, once it?s all set up and you push the go button, it?s a matter of a few seconds and it passes the whole message. It doesn?t tie up the airways to any extent at all.?

Currently, the system works radio-to-radio directly, so it is restricted by distance. The plan is to install a digital repeater on Texada Island, which would allow the group to work in more isolated areas, Poole said.

While the system is somewhat slower than normal Internet service, it is possible to send small attachments, Poole said. ?For example, if you had specific, written instructions that you had to pass on, the commander or whoever was in charge could sign that off and send it off signed to another location,? he said. ?They could receive it and it could be an official document as part of whatever exercise you are involved in.?

Poole said he was excited about the new capabilities, which he said has applications for search and rescue as well. ?If we were in the backcountry and there were poor communications back into the front, we could do equipment requests or resource requests using this system.?

The group is looking for more members, said Storry. ?The issue for us would be if we had an event, to provide volunteers on a continuous basis around the clock for a number of locations takes a lot of people.?

People interested in volunteering don?t have to have their own ham radios, but most do. People do need an amateur radio licence to use amateur radio bands, Storry explained, and computer skills are helpful.

Members of the society assist newcomers with learning how to become an EMBC registered radio communications volunteer. The society meets on the first Saturday of the month from September to June at the Cranberry Training Centre.

Interested readers can find more information by following the PRREP links on the regional district?s website.

Cross cultural differentiation on hospitality and tourism management ...

In a rapidly changing environment and continuing insights into organizational effectiveness, tourism industry, as most other organizations thought about that what they do and how they can create and accomplish their goals and objectives. Once goals are defined is culture that is necessary to advance these goals and objectives and ensure the successful implementation of the necessary changes. In addition, the organizational effectiveness literature has been increasingly emphasizing the importance of culture in motivating and maximizing the value of its intellectual assets, particularly its human capital.? And it can be say that-?

(1) Culture is essential for both successful organizational change and maximizing the value of human capital

(2) Culture management should become a critical management competency, and

(3) While the right culture may be a necessary condition for organizational success,

It is by no means a sufficient condition. An important challenge for managers is to determine what the most effective culture is for their organization and, when necessary, how to change the organizational culture effectively.

This is where one of the most important ways of promotion starts: word of mouth. Word of mouth continues to be, according to experts, the most decisive factor when it comes to choosing the destination and the place of stay. One of the main advantages of this kind of promotion lies in its low cost, as it is the guest who bears most of it: the time consumed and the interest in communicating his/her experience to a group of people who might be in turn motivated to go through it themselves. Another advantage is its high impact, as the level of credibility that a member of the family or friend has cannot be matched by any other promotion strategy, thus turning it into a powerful tool. The expectations of the new guest who chose the hotel on the basis of this kind of promotion shall be determined by the level of satisfaction experienced by the person who recommended the hotel & the expectations of the new guest (real or imaginary) regarding the experience promoted. If, before the arrival of the new guest, the identity of the person who recommended the hotel is known, it is possible to determine, through the analysis of the guest?s profile, his/her level of experience and, particularly, the means by which it was attained, so that it can be reproduced or adapted to the new guest, thus ensuring the same level of service or even a better one. Therefore, the expectations of the new guest can be satisfied, turning him/her into another guest who will in turn attract more guests. There are several means by which hotel employees may obtain the identity of the guest who recommended the hotel by word of mouth: from direct questions on the on- line reservation form, polls-questionnaires or through the hotel butler while assisting the guests. This information is valuable for the hotel, as it primarily allows creating customer valuation policies aimed at stimulating the guests? need to share their experiences after the trip. If a guest checks out from a Hotel feeling that all his/her expectations have been met and even exceeded, he/she will become one of the company?s best allies, as his/her positive comments will attract new guests who are willing to go through the same experience themselves.

These six dimensions of business performance are directly impacted by management of cultural diversity.

In this review the following goals and objectives are achieved-

  1. Critically evaluate theories of leadership and motivation.
  2. Critically evaluate theories relating to managing cultural diversity, how these theories apply to the chosen organisation and what can be import end/changed in the light of the theories.

Cultural Diversity:

Definition of culture and organization culture:

There are verities of definitions of culture. According to Sathe(1984;68)?culture is asset of a important understandings that members of a community share in common.? Organizational culture refers to a pattern of beliefs, values, and learns with experience the course of a organization?s history and in behavior of its members.

National culture and Subculture:

National culture defines by that people from different countries may be influenced by cultural difference in their work environment. It is important to understand people?s different cultural backgrounds. Subculture can be identified as understandings, behaviors and culture forms that characterize as distinctive group within an organizations (Trice,1993;85).

In tourism sector, the company motivates each subculture to develop its own cultural life to understanding other cultural grouping so that the subcultures are developed.

Theories of cultural issues:

Culture presents the biggest challenge to businesses working internationally shared by beliefs, norms and values. Culture influences management also including negotiation tactics, decision making, and rewards and recognition programs. According to Geert Hofstede, culture is more often a source of conflict than

sof synergy. Cultural differences are nuisance at best and often a disaster. In that case, such dimensions do explain the behavior with respect to how cultural differtiation interact with this tourism business.

Maldives work values:

The Individualism is low and collectivism is high in Maldives culture. Hofsted indicates that a positive relation between individualism and per capita GNP( Gross Nation Product). Individualism may be increase in Maldives.

Uncertainty Avoidance, this dimension define when the workers are respective to different ideas and opinions or feel threats. This dimension is too clear in Maldives because they are traditionally been ruled by men rather than the rules. In Maldives the uncertainty Avoidance with strong desire to maintain social order.

Masculinity/Feminists, this dimension describes how assertive and acquisitive worker were in a materialistic sense In Maldives. Hofsted studies had medium score for this dimension. For example, Maldives managers score high in masculinity.

With high power distance countries like Maldives, managers should make autocratic decisions and they have business structures that are typified by close control of operations and fairly weak work ethic.

However, the biggest problem of this organization is cultural awareness which may cause of problem. If service managers are unaware of core cultural expectations of customers it will result in a gap in performance of service.

Role of Manager?in Beach House of Maldives:

Managers are expected to provide instruction, guidance, advice and encouragement to help taem members to improve their performance. The organization has tended to keep a culture alive and measure the cultural fit between the organization and its employees. The human resource practices such as section, performance, training, and career development reinforce the organization?s culture. Beach House of Maldives beliefs also tend to influence the work norms, and communication practices. ?This research indicates that cross culturally aware management provide their culturally diverse service. They are able to provide their serving styles to meet the needs of their foreign customers. To provide best service for customer they associated the following steps-

  • Free training programmes for members
  • Marketing and promotion and implementation of quality.
  • Management should effort much on different cultural staff and train the staff to hospitalized the guest.

Problem Analysis:

What?s the suit ion being create if the tourism and hospitality related Hotel Company not familiar with a foreign culture?

We know about that how ?American mega-investor Kirk Kerkorian sued DaimlerChrysler for after their German chairman, J?rgen Schrempf had bragged in a Financial Times interview that the merger between the two companies are officially promoted as a ?merger of equals? was really no more than a takeover.? The case is still in court but a similar class-action suit by other investors has already been settled by the company for $300 million. Technically, the issue was a legal one but however, what got DaimlerChrysler into trouble was that Schrempf lacked the cultural sensitivity and experience to realize that in the US, they won?t get away with that of their two faced-behaviors.? The same act would expectably have much less dramatic consequences in his home country. Microsoft reported losing several millions of dollars in India, the Arab world, and in South America because of cultural mistakes in some versions of their Windows program.? Incorrect maps, poor translations that introduced offensive language, and other inappropriate material offended locals and in some cases led to government action.? The company had to recall the affected versions, replacing huge quantities of its software packages.? A spokesman admitted that ?some of our employees, however bright they may be, have only a hazy idea about the rest of the world?.? As a consequence, Microsoft now sends their staff to dedicated training classes.

A large high-tech corporation lost more than $10 million in development costs and missed market opportunities when they set up two of their international teams, one in Israel and one in Japan, to directly compete with each other in the same project, developing an important new product.? What the division?s manager was not aware of was that in many cultures, such an approach sends a message to the team that it is incompetent and cannot be trusted.? Rather than serving as a motivator as it might have in the U.S., the decision led to low morale, increased turnover, and poor results in both countries.? The project had to be stopped and re-initiated.

Fortunately, most cross-cultural blunders are less severe, or at least less costly, then in these examples. Nevertheless, the list still goes on and on about how businesses waste money and miss opportunities because of a lack of international experience or preparation.

What Goes Wrong

There are three fundamental ways in which hospitality and tourism hotel business interactions and engagements fail or become more costly these are following in below-

Failure to cross the culture gap: The interaction falls because the parties involved are unable to make a relation the culture gap between them.? Many negotiations end at this stage.?They asked always too much and expect to optimum service or keep a statement that never trusts others because they lived up their promises. These statements might be provides the end of such failed attempts.? Most of the time, these negotiations may be fall in the trace back to poor mutual understanding and faulty initial assumptions rather than bad intentions on either side.

?Competition?:? The cross-cultural interaction limps along, but the parties involved fail to communicate effectively and to build sufficient trust between them.? As a result, the competitive element outweighs the cooperative one, introducing issues over contracts terms, intellectual property, budgets and payments, and so on.? This case is both more common and more devastating than the previous one.? Rather than adding value to a company?s global business strategy, such an engagement can become a major distraction from its key objectives and cause a lot of damage.

Limited collaboration:? The parties have to involve with each other the ways of communicate and interact. However, they never fully trust each other.? In many foreign cultures, people will not make any major business commitments unless a strong business relationship has been established and they feel that the partner can be fully trusted.?In this beach house hotel may be more at ease here because its culture encourages a competitiveness that maintains an element of rivalry business partners are used to.? Dealing with foreign partners thus represents a bigger challenge if the goal is to achieve extensive collaboration.

Recommendation or suggestion:

Common Causes

Six elements can be identified that make or break the success of a global business in tourism and hospitality sector.? All of them are ultimately linked back to people?s to understand the issue of cross culture.

1. Strategic Objectives

Objective is the main power point for any company. However, many international business interactions suffer from poorly defined objectives.? Strategy, goals and approach all need to be set with the target in mind about culture. Culture?s values, strengths, and preferences can be a long term strategic objectives and tactics if it being realized that they are well aligned with others culture.

2.Approach

Like any other running business, the properly planning approach has gain a success in cross-cultural interactions. Strategic objectives need to be translated into a plan of action that defines steps, timing, roles, and responsibilities.? That plan must also take into account the specific preferences and sensitivities of the targeted culture.? Ad-hoc approaches in foreign countries have a very limited chance of success.

3.Negotiation

Negotiating in a different cultural context is one of the most difficult and toughest challenges in international business.? What is really effective and what is the most considered inappropriate varies greatly between countries.? At the time, the stakes are usually high and make any mistakes which approach costly. Finding someone best and most skilled negotiators won?t help much unless they are well-prepared.?If they lack a thorough understanding of the other culture, the company may be in for a business disaster.

4.? Leadership

Once a cross-cultural engagement the leadership are more focused because behind this visionary leadership becomes pivotal.? Leaders will need to consistently demonstrate that they are serious about the situation and willing to work through the cultural differences. They have to take a strong commitment as well as they have to need the accurate skills to identify the sensitive areas and have to act appropriately to build and maintain trust. Executives or middle managers who maintain an ?us-versus-them? attitude can cause huge damage.? Extensive communication both within the own camp and with the foreign side is also essential and requires constant leadership attention.

5.? Facilitation

The importance of relationship and trust building triggers a need for proper facilitation throughout the engagement.? While early in the interactions senior leaders often drive the progress, they may have to become less involved once the engagement is under way.? At that point, it becomes essential that a facilitator be assigned who continues to build the relationship.? Sending an expatriate who lives in the foreign country can be very effective, but only if he or she is sensitive and well familiar with the specific culture.? Companies not paying attention to this aspect frequently find their employees inadvertently triggering confrontations that hurt the business relationship.

6. Team Preparation
Well-defined strategy and good leadership are not enough to make global business interactions successful.?It also essential to get support and help from all team member because they are involved in business and they have taken a important part in hotel business sector. Without proper preparation for the engagement, cooperation will likely be poor and concerns may prevail.? The objective has to be to get both sides into the right mindset, opening up to the engagement as an opportunity rather than viewing it a threat.? Again, it will be very important to understand and address any cultural differences.? Aspects such as how to motivate a team can differ significantly and may dictate a new approach in a foreign culture.

Organizational culture must now take into account:

? The organization must be proactive, not just reactive.

? The organization must influence and manage the environment, not just adapt.

? The organization must be pragmatic, not idealistic.

? The organization must be future-oriented, not predominantly present/past oriented.

? The organization must embrace diversity, not uniformity.

? The organization must be relationship-oriented, not just task-oriented.

? The organization must embrace external connectivity, as well as promote internal integration.

These fundamental assumptions are key to eliminating obstacles that will inhibit the kinds of

internal and external organizational adaptations necessary for future success. They are not,

however, sufficient. They must be reinforced by values, behavioral norms and patterns, artifacts

and symbols, as well as accompanied by a particular mission, set of goals, and strategies.

Conclusion:

As Globalization accelerates business around the world, companies are realizing that proper preparation for international business is a mandatory step that has a strong positive impact on the bottom line.? Effective communication and trust building are the primary factors in making a foreign engagement successful.? They are influenced by several elements that take careful planning and orchestration.? While this requires significant efforts, it is critical to the business success, and the tradeoff between costs and benefits is clearly favorable. Hospitality and Tourism industry grows globally, as the managers are exposed to more and more cross cultural dealings, as the workforce become more and more diverse, then the cultural values increase, as the customer become more knowledgeable about the environment around them, it all generates challenges for the managers. So managers should recognized and acted upon for the success of business.
