Advocates for a bike-friendly Richmond Region should get what they want for the community.

Smooth roads.

Surfaces that don't blow out tires.

Clearly marked bike paths, safe from cars and trucks.

A coordinated regional network that unites urban, suburban and rural; cities and counties.

One major revitalized route that goes north and south. Another that travels east and west.

Completion of the Virginia Capital Trail from Richmond to Williamsburg.

A universal commitment to a healthier Richmond.

A welcoming environment just in time for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.

* * * * *

For those worried about a free ride here, there's a return on the region's investment:

A fitter Richmond that better combats obesity and disease with exercise and the encouragement to move around.

A big lift to amenities sought by generations seeking to be less car-dependent.

An incentive to counter sprawl with more efficient community planning that rewards convenience and utility.

Lesser chances of bike-car accidents.

The land complement to the 2012 distinction of being the nation's top river town.

There's also a bonus reason that was on display at the 41st Public Square: Advocates of bike-friendly roads are Richmond Region super champions in the wings.

This is a group that wants our region to excel.

They could go elsewhere to cities that already demonstrate what they seek.

But they choose to propel Richmond. They see it as a developing canvas that can be turned into a masterpiece.

That's got to be a carrot for any government administrator or elected official, employer or nonprofit chief.

Turn on these folks with a biking network that's a crown jewel, and you'll have a supporter for life.

A pride team that can't be beat.

Regional promoters who will volunteer at the drop of an email call for action.

A group of people who will tell the world that this is best place to live.

And more importantly, a bunch of critical thinkers who will point out a problem and, in short order, offer a solution.

* * * * *

If anything separated this crowd from other Public Square gatherings, it was this achievement alone.

They didn't stop at noting shortcomings, though they did a good job of selling the problems.

They moved to a recommended improvement.

It's not a cynical, carping crowd.

Rather, it's a refreshing, reinventing, rewarding community ready to work shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors on the concept, plan, installation and use.

In a poignant way, they get the value of a Richmond on the go.

Don't disappoint or frustrate this community of special interest.

Give them what they want.

Replacement Rep? GOP names new candidate after prostitution scandal

The Republican Party of Florida on Saturday chose Michael LaRosa, R-Celebration, as a replacement candidate for House District 42, which became enmeshed in scandal this week.

On Monday, Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, abruptly dropped out of the race when his name came up on client list during an investigation into an alleged prostitution ring.

Horner?s name will remain on the ballot, but all votes cast for him will go to LaRosa, a young candidate who graduated for the University of Central Florida in 2004.

"I commend Michael LaRosa for his strong desire to serve his fellow Floridians in the State House and his willingness to run under difficult circumstances. The citizens of House District 42 will be well represented in Tallahassee under his leadership" RPOF Chairman Lenny Curry said in a statement.

LaRosa, the son of a Cuban immigrant and a Miami native, will face Eileen Game, a business woman running on the Democratic ticket. There are more registered Democrats than Republicans in the Central Florida district, but Horner was widely expected to win reelection. The district is home to a large portion of Hispanic voters.?

Here?s the statement from RPOF:

Taiwan enters island fray, but China and Japan shrug

Boats from China and Japan chased each other around a set of disputed islets, setting off a diplomatic crisis. But when Taiwan entered the fray, neither side seemed to care.

By Ralph Jennings,?Correspondent / September 28, 2012

An aerial view shows a Japan Coast Guard patrol ship, fishing boats from Taiwan and Taiwan's Coast Guard vessel sailing side by side near Uotsuri island (top), a part of the disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan, Diaoyu in China, and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan, in this September 25 photo.

The government in Taipei said last week it wanted to be a peacemaker in a sovereignty dispute involving a set of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Boats from China and Japan had chased each other around the islets they both claim, setting off mass protests in China that sent Sino-Japanese relations to a new low.

Then this week, Taiwan stopped talking about peace as 12 of its coast guard vessels escorted some 50 Taiwanese fishing boats to the islets, a sort passive-aggressive reminder of its own claim to islets that are 137 miles from Taiwan. Japan controls the islands, which it calls the Senkakus, and sprayed water cannons at Taiwan?s boats to keep them away.

But instead of setting off a diplomatic crisis, no one appears to be taking Taiwan too seriously ? at least not yet.

As far as China is concerned Taiwan is still part of China even though a Nationalist Party set up a rival government in Taipei after losing the Chinese civil war to the Communists in the 1940s. Beijing believes it will capture Taiwan someday even though the two sides are now self-ruled. By that logic any new territory Taiwan locks in would eventually go to China anyway.

At the same time, Japan and Taiwan can hardly live without each other. The former World War II colonizer is today one of Taiwan?s top five sources of tourism. Common Taiwanese take fashion, food, and shopping cues from peers in Tokyo while a strong contingent of conservative Japanese lawmakers who dislike communist China embraces Taiwan as a friendly fellow democracy.

?Japan is probably the only country in the world that attaches strategic importance to Taiwan,? says Bonnie Glaser, a senior fellow with the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies.

But Taiwan?s leadership neither expects to conquer the tiny islets nor broker a peace deal. President Ma Ying-jeou?s government is, instead, intent on using the issue to fulfill an often failed, 4-year-old domestic pledge: expand clout among major world nations through informal ties usually described as soft power.?

China forbids its 170-plus diplomatic allies from engaging Taiwan directly. But Taiwan may hope its idea to be a regional peacemaker?will stimulate scholarly debate in the United States, putting Taipei on the map of high-level academic conferences, says Alexander Huang, strategic studies professor with Tamkang University in Taiwan. ?Ma has taken at least an initiative and a moral high ground,? Mr. Huang says.

Taiwan has also avoided bashing China with heated language (letting Japan handle that) over the disputed islets, though they make separate claims. That puts the two sides in the same boat as seen from Beijing. ?It embraces the one-China concept in Beijing?s eyes,? Mr. Huang adds.

That edge will make China happier, and Taiwan wealthier, when the two sides bargain over trade tariffs or investment rules.?

Making good on that pledge to expand clout matters now as President Ma Ying-jeou sees approval ratings of just 15 to 25 percent this year so far because of domestic issues such as rising prices and stubborn wages. Term limits would stop Mr. Ma from seeking a new term in 2016, but his Nationalist Party could inherit any approval problems he leaves behind.

8 Tips for Shopping at Home Centers

Consider the Combo Tool Packages

Think those combo packages tools are only good as Christmas gifts for those 20-something first-time homebuyers you know? Perhaps not?they could be a good deal for more people, like the handyman whose power-tool set has some miles on it and could stand for an overhaul. Sure, you might end up with a flashlight that you don't need, but you can also buy must-have tools, like a cordless drill, circular saw, and reciprocating saw together and save money versus buying them individually.

And the savings can be significant. Jason Swanson, director of communications for TTI Power Tool Group in Anderson, S.C. (which includes the Ryobi and Milwaukee tool brands), says you can save hundreds of dollars with combos. "You're not only buying a combo pack, you're getting into a system," he says. "You don't have to buy a charger and battery for each tool. You might spend $99 and get a $150 value. You can save a couple hundred dollars on a 6-pack of tools."

Pay Attention to Tool Details

Some tool brands are only sold at certain home centers, such as Rigid, available only at The Home Depot, and Kobalt, which sells at Lowe's. But brands that are available through multiple retailers sometimes have versions that are exclusive to a particular store chain. That means the brand of circular saw that's available at a home center may not be the same version that's sold at a tool outlet or on the manufacturer's website.

Do your research on tool specs including voltage, amps, accessories, and features to make sure you compare tools accurately, and not just by looking at price. For example, the Milwaukee M18 Lithium-ion 18-Volt Cordless 6-1/2 inch circular saw sold at The Home Depot for $119 is almost the same as the version sold at Northern Tool + Equipment for $350. But the latter version comes with two batteries and a charger, while The Home Depot version doesn't, which is a problem if you don't already have them.

Go to the Demos

Some DIYers stride into a home center feeling like Ron Swanson, ready to tell the cheerful staff, "I know more than you." But many home centers employ former contractors and tradespeople who can give expert advice. So listen. If you have a particular question, don't be shy about bringing in a picture of your room and asking for help. And the experts also provide in-store demonstrations, like how to install tile, in which they walk you through every step of a project with a lot of helpful tips that you won't get by reading manufacturer's instructions. The pros can also tell you exactly what tools and materials you need to complete a job and potential problems to watch out for.

Take Advantage of Store Programs

Already have a home center card? If so, it can help you keep track of purchases. That might sound a bit dubious, if you won't want stores having data on you, but it can actually be a benefit. For example, if you forgot the paint color used in your bathroom, scan your MyLowe's card in a store to find out the exact color. This makes "it simpler to remember what color a wall is painted or what size air filters are needed," says Tara Gudger, a spokesperson for Lowe's.

Other programs ensure the products you want are available when you need them. "When a customer places an order on lowes.com and selects ?Pick Up In Store ? Free' as the shipping option, the order is guaranteed to be ready at the store in 20 minutes," Gudger points out.

Be Leery of Code Advice

Although some home center employees know building codes from having worked in the field, others don't. An employee at my local home center, who asked not to be named, said store policy prohibits employees from giving advice on adhering to codes or saying what codes require. But some employees still do, and they can be wrong. For advice on codes, talk to building inspectors?they're also willing to help.

And Don't Assume Products Meet Codes

Just because a home center sells a product doesn't mean it meets local building codes. The stores may not know codes for your jurisdiction, especially new codes, and they sell products nationally. So the water heater package it sells may be acceptable in one area, but not another. It's up to you to know the codes and buy products accordingly. "The person doing the installation is responsible for making sure everything is up to code," an employee and former plumber at my local home center, who asked not to be named, told me. "That's why it's important to get a building permit?you'll know what's required to meet code."

Plan Ahead for Special Orders

Home centers offer a rich variety of products via their websites and special orders. If you just want a different sized vanity than what's in stock, the home center may be able to get it immediately from a local store. But products that need to be specially ordered could take a month or longer to arrive, so plan accordingly. You don't want to tear up your kitchen and then have a four-week hiatus waiting for the cabinets to arrive.

Cut Lumber Down to Size

For no cost or a small fee, home centers will cut or rip your lumber, making it easier for you to handle and fit in your vehicle. It'll also save you from having to handle and rip unwieldy large sheets of plywood on your own at home.

"It's a great benefit that can save you a lot of time and hassle, and it makes carrying the lumber a lot more convenient," an employee at my local home center told me. "We don't have to cut the lumber to its precise dimensions. We can make the cuts a little longer than what you need, then you can make the final cut at home."

PSA $25 Google Play credit for Nexus 7 ends this weekend

Those who have been keeping a close eye on Google's 7-inch, Jelly Bean-loaded Nexus 7 would know that the company kindly includes 25 bucks worth of Play credit with any purchase of said tablet. Unfortunately, as the famed cliché would tell us, all good things must come to an end -- and, well, such is the case with this neat promotion, which will expire on Sunday, September 30th. Here's the good news, however: there's still a relatively good amount of time for folks interested to get it on the Google Play deal, so now would be the perfect moment to snag what some are calling the best $200 tablet -- and who knows, this might even lead to a post-order Gangnam Style celebration of your own.

NYC to get 'world's largest' Ferris wheel

9 hrs.

The Big Apple is getting another "biggest": The world's biggest Ferris wheel is to be built on Staten Island, in an ambitious attempt to draw tourists to what's sometimes known as the city's "forgotten borough," officials announced Thursday.

The $230 million attraction, to be called the New York Wheel, is to grace a spot overlooking the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the downtown Manhattan skyline ? a singular view that officials hope will add to the appeal of what they say would be the world's tallest Ferris wheel. The 625-foot-tall structure would swing higher than the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye and a "High Roller" wheel planned in Las Vegas.

"The New York Wheel will be an attraction unlike any other in New York City ? even unlike any other on the planet," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a release.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2014 on the privately financed project, which also includes a 100-shop outlet mall and a 200-room hotel. The grand opening could come by the end of 2015.

While riding the Staten Island Ferry is a staple of many visitors' agendas, the city has long sought to entice tourists off the boat and into Staten Island, the least populous and most remote borough ? one once known for hosting the world's largest landfill.

Australian tourists Leah Field and Adam Lica, for example, were riding the ferry Thursday for its views of the Statue of Liberty. They thought they might have lunch on the Staten Island side but weren't planning to explore further.

"We weren't sure what there is to do there," explained Lica, 32, of Melbourne.

Were there a giant Ferris wheel, would the couple stay to ride it? Probably, he said.

Staten Island has its attractions, including a minor league ballpark and the zoo that hosts Staten Island Chuck, New York's answer to the famous prognosticating groundhog of Punxsutawney, Pa. Chuck bears the dubious distinction of having once bitten Bloomberg.

But Staten Island, the only one of the city's five boroughs not accessible by subway, tends to get overshadowed by its municipal neighbors, so much so that some have at times suggested it secede from the city.

To Staten Island resident Miatta Bryant, the wheel might bring the borough more respect.

"I think it'll be a really good idea," the 26-year-old certified nursing assistant said. "People always say Staten Island is so boring."

The project is expected to bring $500 million in private investment to the borough's St. George waterfront, and the developers will pay the city $2.5 million a year in rent for the land.

92 percent of the top 50 programs for children ages 2-11 show social bullying

Washington, DC (September 24, 2012) Children ages 2-11 view an alarming amount of television shows that contain forms of social bullying or social aggression. Physical aggression in television for children is greatly documented, but this is the first in-depth analysis on children's exposure to behaviors like cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.

Nicole Martins, Indiana University, and Barbara J. Wilson, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, published in the Journal of Communication a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research. One hundred and fifty television shows were viewed and analyzed, and 92% of the programming contained some version of social aggressionapproximately 14 times per hour. There was careful attention to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified, or committed by an attractive perpetrator.

The findings suggested that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers. The study found that attractive characters who perpetrated social aggression were rarely punished for their behavior, and that socially aggressive scenes were significantly more likely than physically aggressive scenes to be presented in a humorous way. In some cases, social aggression on television may pose more of a risk than portrayals of physical aggression do.

"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch. Parents should not assume that a program is okay for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence. Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless antisocial in nature," Martins said.

"Martins and Wilson's research shows just how important it is to broaden our view of 'violence' beyond the physical; particularly as their findings indicate that social violence like insults and name calling occurs just as commonly in children's programming," said Amy Jordan, director of the Media and the Developing Child sector at the University of Pennsylvania and Chair of the Children, Adolescents and the Media Division of the International Communication Association.

"As a society, we need to acknowledge that our children are learning to be socially aggressive, and that one source of this learning may be the television shows they watch. We may not see physical manifestations of this type of violence, but children who are victims of social aggression from their peers may develop deep and lasting emotional scars."

Everything You Need To Know About The Startup Ecosystem In ...

As Dave McClure and Geeks on the Plane are touring Moscow, Tallinn and Zagreb this week, I have finally written this post summarizing the result of a year-long research project exploring the Russian and Eastern European startup ecosystem. The results will hopefully help those who weren?t invited to join the GOAP crowd to get a better sense of what is happening in the former socialist countries from Slovenia to Russia.

There is a lot of action in Eastern Europe, but for lack of time I simply cannot tell all the stories. Instead I have pulled together names and links, and created a few social media lists to connect startup entrepreneurs, accelerators, and investors in Russia and Eastern Europe on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. You can find these lists below.

Success stories

Over the past decade the region has seen quite a few global tech and Internet success stories already. Russian Parallels and IPG Photonics, Hungarian LogMeIn, Czech AVG and Avast, Romanian BitDefender and Soft32, Serbian Nordeus, Lithuanian GetJar, Latvian Ask.fm, Polish Filestube, Estonian Skype ? The list goes on but outside of their respective home countries there is little awareness of exactly how much innovation the post-socialist region has already produced.

So, whilst certainly far from complete, here is a Facebook list of Russian / CEE success stories that will be regularly updated with new success stories that hit my radar.

Startups

#Estonianmafia hash tag, coined by McClure last year, continued to make headlines in tech blogs and the general press, as the phenomenon of the unusually high number of global startups in a small country inhabited by 1,3 million people drew further attention to Estonian Internet businesses. On Twitter I found over a hundred Estonian startups and entrepreneurs, and together with Latvia and Lithuania the Baltic Rim accounts for nearly 220 Twitter startup handles. It did not come as a surprise, that McClure and GOAP made a stop-over in Tallinn this week.

Other Eastern European startups may not have seen the same level of publicity, but across 20 countries I found over 800 Internet businesses that are growing at various speeds.

To get connected with the regional startup ecosystem, adding Google+ circles is probably the easiest way. Here is a Google+ circle for Russian startups, and two (here and here) for Eastern European entrepreneurs and their companies.

There are more than 1200 Twitter handles across these three lists: Russia, Eastern Europe 1 and Eastern Europe 2. The feed may end up being an alphabet soup, as many users tweet in their local languages.

The Facebook lists includes only Russian and Eastern European startups? fan pages, as subscribing to individual founders was often not an option. With Facebook lists, including updates from the list into your newsfeed is optional. Finally, there is a Facebook group called New Europe Startups.

Most of the CEE countries have more or less active startup communities with the exception of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Moldova, where I did not identify any startups.

Accelerators

On my Facebook list of startup accelerators, incubators and co-working spaces in Russia and Eastern Europe there are 50+ entities, with Estonia leading again based on the number of support organizations per country (Startup Wise Guys, Gamefounders, Garage48, Tehnopol and others). The oldest accelerator appears to be Hungarian European Entrepreneurs Foundation founded by Peter Zaboji. Most of the other accelerators have been launched in the course of 2011-2012. I am not sure there is space for more, although Croatian and Serbian entrepreneurs might disagree.

Inevitably, the list includes Seedcamp, which has been backing Eastern European startups from 2007 starting with Slovenian Zemanta (and also because Seedcamp?s Carlos Espinal?s Twitter handle is @cee, which should have been mine!). HackFwd has been backing many Eastern European teams primarily from the Baltic Rim, whilst Jon Bradford of Springboard is on board with nearly every Eastern European startup accelerator and the Russian TexDrive.

Unlike the Facebook list, the Google+ circle and the Twitter list of accelerators include company accounts as well as individuals? profiles and Twitter handles.

Investors

New venture funds are opening up in Russia, with the rest of the Eastern Europe lagging behind. Global funds such as Accel, Index, Mangrove Capital Partners, Balderton, Tiger Global Management, VenTech, Intel Ventures, Atomico, Kima Ventures, e.ventures and others are making big bets in Russia. Their latest investments included Avito, Ivi.ru, Ozon, Ostrovok, KupiVip, LaModa and many others. German EarlyBird, Danish Sunstone, Swiss Redalphine, and German Point Nine Capital have backed Eastern European companies in the past. Others, such as Vienna-based SpeedInvest and the Nordic Creandum are monitoring the local startup scene.

Increasingly, Eastern European startups get investors? attention as well; backed are SocialBakers, Prezi, GrabCAD, TransferWise, Brainient, Farmeron and others.

Unlike startups and accelerators, the investors are harder to track in social media, but I did my best. Here are their Google+, Twitter and Facebook lists.

The list of venture investors in Russia is led perhaps by Runa Capita,l based on the number of deals the fund has announced over the past year; Esther Dyson, the veteran of investing in Russia and CEE; and ru-Net, based on the size of the fund. Most notable Russian venture investors include (in alphabetical order): ?ABRT, AddVenture, Almaz Capital Partners, Baring Vostok Capital Partners Ltd, Finam Capital Partners, Foresight Capital Partners, Frontier Ventures, Imi.vc, ?Itech Capital, Kite Ventures, Leta Group, Modernus Capital Partners, ?N Lab Ventures, Runa Capital, RuNet, RUSNANO, Russian Ventures, Russia Partners, Ruvento Venture fund, Softline Venture Partners, Start Fellows, Synergy Innovations, and VTB Capital.

In Central and Eastern Europe the number of players is much smaller and they often make investments outside of their home countries. Seed-stage venture funds include Credo Ventures (Prague), RSG Capital (Ljubljana), Day One Capital (Budapest), MTVP (Tallinn), RubyLight (Riga), 3TS Capital Partners (Vienna), Neveq (Sofia), Xevin Investments (Warsaw and Bucharest).

In Poland the supply of seed capital appears to be better than in the rest of Eastern Europe. Seed investors include (in alphabetical order): AIP Seed Capital, Giza Polish Ventures, IIF Fund Innovation Nest, IQ Partners, SATUS Venture, SpeedUp Group and Xevin Investments, although there are others that have escaped my radar. An established Polish fund, MCI Capital, has recently made an exit from Czech Netretail Holding, owner of ecommerce site Mall.cz, which was sold to Allegro Group for an estimated 220 million Euros.

An emerging trend is the investment activities of the local serial Internet entrepreneurs. A number of successful Russian and Eastern European Internet entrepreneurs are investing in the new projects, leveraging their experience in building Internet companies, existing Internet traffic and cash flow. One of the better-known startup factories is Fast Lane Ventures, co-founded by Oskar Hartmann (Russian private shopping club KupiVIP).

In Poland, Arek Senko, the co-founder of Red Sky Group, the owner of Filestube search engine is now involved in more than 30 Internet projects. Latvian?Draugiem Group,?the owner of the successful local social network is working on a dozen projects as well.

Tom Cupr, the founder and CEO of the largest Eastern European daily deals company Slevomat Group, has set up venture arm Slevomat Ventures, which has already made its first investment into the food ordering portal PizzaTime. Also in the Czech Republic Tomas Matejcek and his partners at Miton.cz build Internet companies following a number of successful exits.

Some Eastern European funds, such as the Ukrainian TA Venture or Estonian Ambient Sound Investments back global rather than local companies. Russian late stage investor ru-Net also has a US arm called RTP Ventures, which funded Fab.com amongst others. And then there is Yuri Milner, who despite his global focus has created StartFellows, a seed-stage grant program for Russian entrepreneurs, together with the founder of Vkontakte Pavel Durov.

Google+, Twitter and Facebook lists

In conclusion, here are once again the lists of entrepreneurs, startups, accelerators and investors in Russian and Eastern Europe. To meet some of them, pay attention to the region?s startup conferences, many of which are taking place in the next couple of months. The list of local events can be found here.

Mack gets endorsement of small business federation ? Central ...

Campaigning at an Orlando restaurant supply company, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV accepted the endorsement Tuesday from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

?He has a very, very strong conservative record,? said the company?s chairman Jerry Pierce, incoming chairman of the NFIB/Florida Leadership Council.

The NFIB officially is non-partisan but almost universally conservative on business and tax issues, which leads it to regularly endorse Republicans. Still, Pierce cited the organization?s scorecard, which gave Mack, as a congressman from Fort Myers,?a 100 percent support rating on NFIB-watched legislation, and incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson a 37 percent rating.

In front of an intimate gathering of about 30 people, mostly small business owners, Mack??accepted the endorsement with a vow to continue to be pro-small business.

Mack, (shown above getting a shop tour from REW President Brad Pierce) is in the middle of a six-day campaign bus tour of Central and North Florida.

?This is about small business. As you look around our country right now, people are struggling to grow their businesses, people are struggling to keep the employees they have,? Mack said. ?Small businesses are what make up our communities. They?re our neighbors. They?re our friends. They?re our families. We need to have a government that honors and respects small business owners, not trying to pass laws and regulations that hurt small business owners.?

Language use is simpler than previously thought, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For more than 50 years, language scientists have assumed that sentence structure is fundamentally hierarchical, made up of small parts in turn made of smaller parts, like Russian nesting dolls.

A new Cornell study suggests language use is simpler than they had thought.

Co-author Morten Christiansen, Cornell professor of psychology and co-director of the Cornell Cognitive Science Program, and his colleagues say that language is actually based on simpler sequential structures, like clusters of beads on a string.

"What we're suggesting is that the language system deals with words by grouping them into little clumps that are then associated with meaning," he said.

Sentences are made up of such word clumps, or "constructions," that are understood when arranged in a particular order. For example, the word sequence "bread and butter" might be represented as a construction, whereas the reverse sequence of words ("butter and bread") would likely not.

The sequence concept has simplicity on its side; language is naturally sequential, given the temporal cues that help us understand and be understood as we use language. Moreover, the hierarchy concept doesn't take into account the many other cues that help convey meaning, such as the setting and knowing what was said before and the speaker's intention.

The researchers drew on evidence in language-related fields from psycholinguistics to cognitive neuroscience. For example, research in evolutionary biology indicates that humans acquired language (and animals did not) because we have evolved abilities in a number of areas, such as being able to correctly guess others' intentions and learn a large number of sounds that we then relate to meaning to create words. In contrast, the hierarchy concept suggests humans have language thanks only to highly specialized "hardware" in the brain, which neuroscientists have yet to find.

Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that the same set of brain regions seem to be involved in both sequential learning and language, suggesting that language is processed sequentially. And several recent psycholinguistic studies have shown that how well adults and children perform on a sequence learning task strongly predicts how well they can process the deluge of words that come at us in rapid succession when we're listening to someone speak. "The better you are at dealing with sequences, the easier it is for you to comprehend language," Christiansen said.

The study by Christiansen and his colleagues has important implications for several language-related fields. From an evolutionary perspective, it could help close what has been seen as a large gap between the communications systems of humans and other nonhuman primates. "This research allows us a better understanding of our place in nature, in that we can tie our language ability, our communication abilities, more closely to what we can see in other species. It could have a big impact in terms of allowing us to think in more humble terms about the origin of language in humans," Christiansen said.

The research could also affect natural language processing, the area of computer science that deals with human language, by encouraging scholars to focus on sequential structure when trying to create humanlike speech and other types of language processing, Christiansen said. He pointed out that machines already successfully perform such tasks as translation and speech recognition thanks to algorithms based on sequential structures.

The study, "How hierarchical is language use?" was published Sept. 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The research was funded by the European Union, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Binational Science Foundation.

State of California sues movie producers over alleged ponzi scheme

State of California Sues Movie Producers Over Alleged Ponzi Scheme 6:51 PM PDT 9/20/2012 by Alex Ben Block

The suit claims a 2009 movie starring Simon Baker and Paz Vega cheated investors, many of them senior citizens, out of millions of dollars.

The state of California has sued Windsor Pictures, Skyline Pictures and a group of related financial entities and individuals charging them with operating a Ponzi scheme and committing fraud in raising more than $23 million to make and distribute movies.

According to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the defendants used the money raised to pay large commissions, skim money to various interrelated companies and distribute dividends to investors until that abruptly stopped in August 2011.

Read the Complaint Here.

?Defendants specifically targeted unsophisticated senior investors,? says the suit, filed by the state's corporations commissioner Jan Lynn Owen. The targets allegedly were invited to ?free? seminars where they were told they would get investment advice and were then offered a ?no risk? investment in movies that would have ?high rates of return.?

PHOTOS: Christian Bale, Lindsay Lohan Pose with Their Lawyers

Michelle Kenen Seward is named in the suit as CEO and executive producer for Windsor Pictures; a partner in Skyline Pictures; as well as CEO and president of affiliated entities Prot?g? Financial; and CEO and more of Saxe-Coburg.

Dror Soref is named as CEO of Skyline Pictures and is alleged to have been the director of the 2009 movie Not Forgotten, a thriller described on IMDB as the story of a man and his wife on the Texas-Mexico border who must face a tortured past in order to save their kidnapped daughter. The movie, which starred Simon Baker, Paz Vega, Ken Davitian and Claire Forlani, grossed just $54,000 in theaters, according to IMdb.

A call to Skyline Pictures reached a number that has been disconnected.

Seward, says the suit, formed Prot?g? Financial in 2004 and beginning in late 2006, it ?offered and sold unqualified, non-exempt securities?in the form of agreements related to Windsor, from promissory notes to bridge loans to convertible debentures."

PHOTOS: THR's Power Lawyers 2012 Breakfast: Tom Cruise and Charlie Sheen's Attorneys Mingle at 6th Annual Event

The company allegedly told senior citizens it was a safe investment that would pay a higher return than the savings and investments they currently held: ?In many instances investors entrusted their entire life savings to the defendants with the hopes of earning substantial returns to protect them during their golden years,? the suit alleges.

From November 2006 through March 2010, at least $10.4 million worth of securities related to Not Forgotten were sold in about 91 transactions, according to the suit.

Not Forgotten money, according to bank records cited in the suit, was diverted and comingled with other funds. The defendants allegedly ?misrepresented to investors that their investment funds would be used to produce, finance, distribute and market Not Forgotten, when in fact investor monies would be used to pay prior investors in a Ponzi scheme.?

PHOTOS: Top 10 Legal Disclaimers in Hollywood

The checks to investors stopped coming and in 2011 investors allegedly were informed the movie had not made any return. ?Many investors face significant hardships,? says the suit, ?including an inability to pay for basic necessities such as housing and medical care.?

The state is asking for a preliminary injunction and permanent injunction to stop the defendants and their companies from selling any more securities, from conducting business as investment advisors and from transferring any property or money that was raised by the schemes.

The state also wants restitution for investors in the amount of at least $23.2 million. The suit also seeks civil penalties of $25,000 for each violation of the Corporate Securities Act, and repayment for costs and expenses of the investigation and their attorneys.

Facebook party turns to rioting in Netherlands

(AP) ? Thousands of revelers descended on a small Dutch town sparking a riot after a party invitation posted on Facebook went viral, authorities said Saturday.

Prosecutor Hessel Schuth said 34 people were arrested were arrested Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning and would be prosecuted for public order offenses. Several people were injured, but none were believed to be seriously hurt.

"Scum ran amok in our town," said Rob Bats, mayor of Haren, 185 kilometers (115 miles) north of Amsterdam.

"An innocent invitation on Facebook for a party led to serious rioting, destruction, plundering, arson and injuries in the middle of Haren," he said.

Bats said an initial analysis showed a core group of rioters "were very violent and well-prepared and deliberately sought confrontation" with hundreds of police who had been dispatched to the town amid fears of trouble.

Dutch media reported that the party originally was planned as a small celebration by a 16-year-old girl but her invitation went viral when she posted it on Facebook.

Some of the people arriving in Haren on Friday wore T-shirts emblazoned with "Project X Haren," a reference to the film "Project X" that portrayed an out-of-control party.

On Saturday, another Facebook group sprang up called Project Clean-X Haren, urging people to help clear up the debris littering the town's streets.

(AP) ? The anti-Islamic movie trailer inflaming the Middle East opens with Muslims ransacking a Christian medical clinic and then segues into a flashback of Muhammad's life. "Set the place on fire! We'll burn out these forsaken Christians!" cries one Muslim character.

The opening scene from "Innocence of Muslims," although crude, resonates with some Egyptian Christians, who have suffered years of persecution and attacks by Islamic militants.

The 14-minute trailer on YouTube enraged Muslims worldwide with its depiction of Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. Most Egyptian Christians in the U.S. have rejected the movie and say the man and the nonprofit tied to the film are fringe players who are not well-known in the Coptic Orthodox Church, the church for the vast majority of Coptic Christians in America.

A tiny minority of U.S. Copts, however, have used their adopted nation's free speech protections to speak out against Islam in a way that would not be tolerated in their native Egypt. The few who engage in this anti-Muslim, evangelical activism ? including those behind the movie trailer ? are fueled by that history, said Eliot Dickinson, an associate professor of political science at Western Oregon University who has written a book on U.S. Copts.

"Whoever made this film is such an outlier in their community that it's completely unrepresentative," Dickinson said. "But what it does is, it taps into this frustration of always being persecuted back in Egypt and let's not downplay that. To be a Copt in Egypt now is a very, very difficult life because, especially after the Arab Spring, it's open season."

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, is the man federal authorities have said is behind the film, though he has only acknowledged publicly that he was involved in management and logistics. He has a criminal record that includes drug and check fraud convictions and has been in hiding since leaving his suburban Los Angeles home last weekend.

Media for Christ was listed as the production company for the film and its headquarters was where most of the movie was made. Its president is Joseph N. Abdelmasih, an outspoken critic of Muslims who also has gone into hiding. Steve Klein, a California insurance agent who has dedicated his life to warning the world about Muslim extremism, has said he was a consultant and promoter of the film.

Nakoula and Abdelmasih are followers of a U.S. Coptic priest named Zakaria Botros Henein, who has not been linked to the film but owns a home in Orange County and has been called Islam's Public Enemy No. 1 for his teachings disparaging the faith.

A man who answered the phone at a listing for Henein in Huntington Beach hung up on the AP.

The trailer was released against a backdrop of increasing uncertainty for the estimated 8 million Christians who remain in Egypt and now live under an Islamist government run by the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, following last year's overthrow of longtime president and U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak. Many Copts who fled their homeland for the U.S. and other Western nations in the late 1960s and 1970s still have relatives in Egypt and are concerned for their safety.

The Coptic Orthodox Church is home to the vast majority of the 300,000 Coptic Christians in America. In addition to Los Angeles, the largest concentrations of U.S. Copts are in New Jersey, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston and Cleveland.

Henein left the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles a decade ago and has no connection to it, said Bishop Serapion, the church leader for Southern California and Hawaii. "We don't know about what he is doing, we are not responsible (for him), even we don't even know where he is," Serapion said.

Coptic leaders said they were unaware of Nakoula until the trailer surfaced. Media for Christ, which raised more than $1 million last year, is known but not embraced by Coptic leaders.

Magdy Azer, president of the California Coptic Assembly, called the charity a "fanatic" group and said its program called "The Way TV" is full of anti-Islamist preaching and pleas for donations.

"What was their intent? I don't know," he said of the filmmakers. "For me, they most likely just wanted to grab attention from everybody about the persecution in Egypt."

Instead, the video has put the spotlight on a small U.S. immigrant community that for decades has focused on charity to help their fellow Christians in Egypt instead.

A survey released earlier this year by George Washington University found that 92 percent of U.S. Copts donated money to Egypt in the last three years at an average amount of $5,000 per person, said Nermien Riad, founder and executive director of the Virginia-based charity Coptic Orphans.

"The Copts are always wanting to be the salt of the earth and a light to the world. The great majority focuses on good and on doing good," said Riad, whose organization co-sponsored the study. "These are Christian values."

Church leaders were also quick to distance themselves from the movie, saying it doesn't match the sentiments of most Copts.

"We have never reacted or behaved like this for the very simple reason that this is against Christianity," said the Rev. Joseph Boules, a priest at St. Mary and St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Church in Anaheim. "We are not going to abandon our principles and return hate for hate. That's not what orthodoxy is about."

The Christian minority in Egypt has long lived with violence.

Last year, a New Year's day bombing at Saints Church in Alexandria, Egypt killed 21 worshippers, setting off three days of protests and clashes with security forces and Muslim passers-by. In 2010, six Christians and a Muslim guard were killed in a drive-by shooting in southern Egypt on Coptic Christmas Eve.

Many U.S. Copts now worry that the video will worsen the situation for their fellow Copts in Egypt. Christians there saw an increase in violence after Florida pastor Terry Jones threatened to burn the Quran and after the publication of cartoons ridiculing Muhammad, said Boules, the Coptic priest.

"For some reason when something inflammatory or offensive comes out, some people rush to shoot first and aim later," he said.
